As always there’s no point having a festival on the beach if you’re not going to take full advantage of your surroundings so you can expect some seriously sick pool/boat parties courtesy of Metropolis, Drop The Mustard and Bigger Than Barry.

Red Bull are no joke when it comes to organising completely next level raving affairs and last night’s Revolutions In Sound was something of epic proportions. Red Bull took over the entire EDF Energy London Eye, packing every single capsule with the best DJ’s, bands, MC’s from just about every genre and every corner of the earth along with a load of Red Bull ravaged revellers.

It was a hard decision we must admit having to choose which pod to skank out in -with the likes of Skream & Benga, David Rodigan, Lunice, Professor Green, Channel One Soundsystem, Jess Mills Ft. Zinc, Ms. Dynamite, Kano and even more to choose from – but in the end, we went for Digital Soundboy Soundsystem and it was probably the best decision we could ever had made.

After the doors of the original rudeboy, David Rodigan’s pod closed it was our time as RWD plus our Red Bull rep Rob, some crazy dudes from Kingston (whom we were a little worried about being in a confined space with) and some random stragglers that joined us along the way entered the Digital Soundboy Soundsystem pod (complete with our own bar). The cheeky looks on the faces of Shy FX, Breakage, Stamina MC, B-Traits and Youngman as we all jumped onboard set us up for what was about to be a revolution like no other. They even hooked us up with goody bags complete with horns, stickers, specially printed tees, serious it felt like carnival up in that pod especially when you add the free-flowing Eristoff, Jim Beam and of course Red Bull into the mix.

Shy FX alongside B-Traits on the mic kicked off proceedings nice and easy with no hesitation straight into pure jungle flavas. Not only were we the only luckiest pod-goers going, we were infront of Benji B Deviation’s string quartet who probably didn’t appreciate the bassline and horn blowing coming from our direction but it gave us jokes all the same. With a bashy dub coming in Stamina MC stepped up to the mic in his element and Youngman had the funniest lyrics when he started going in on one of the lucky ticket winner’s bare feet which were dancing away on the seats by then. Somehow within one revolution an hour had nearly passed, the bar was out of vodka (this has nothing to do with RWD, okay this has a lot to do with RWD), and despite coming up with a plan to protest leaving the pod, our red lit raving vehicle just kept on going. The excitement of yet another ‘Revolution in Sound’ and the fact that Breakage just stepped up to the decks ensured an almost deafening response from all twenty-two of us in the pod not to mention some jumping which definitely made RWD and the pod a little shaky.

Breakage started things off kind of smooth but it wasn’t long before he started drawing for some old school grime and dubstep dubs, even dashing a few vocals from Tempa T on top; it was so sick people were looking around confused about what was actually happening. Our ears are still ringing now due to the horn inspired reload signals and no surprise when the producer was drawing for his own stonkers like Newham General’s Hard. But it was when he spun fellow Digital Soundboy Shy FX’s Raver that the whole pod above The Thames actually became a bit scary for like a milli second as the track spawned all kinds of carnival vibes. We can’t even explain what happened in the last half an hour or so, (this may be to do with switching to Jim Beam for the second rotation but we can’t confirm this), all we know is there were fifteen seriously lucky and happy as hell people enjoying the craziness of Digital Soundboy System.

Red Bull you exceeded yourselves once again.

P.S. Please, please, please, can you do that again!

Last Weekend RWD went up north to witness some of our favourite artists and DJ’s tear up the stages and tents of Manchester’s Platt Fields at this year’s Parklife Weekender; Nardene Scott fills you in on exactly what you missed.

The line up was enough to get people hype, (that’s all 40,000 people who managed to grab tickets for the sold out 2-day music fest) but when the sun appeared the welly wearing revellers were almost in shock that the notorious Manchester rains decided not to show up.

A surprisingly breezy entrance into the park considering the size of the crowd and then it was time to plan out exactly how we were supposed to see every act we wanted to spread across the SIX tents not forgetting the main stage.

After a quick pit stop in the Hospitality Tent witnessing some dark DnB we headed right over to the far side of the park to the Ape X Metropolis tent, just in time for Mistajam. As usual the Midlands native had the crowd on lock with everyone’s favourite party bangers from the world of bass ahead of another Midlander known for his wobbly remixes, James Jacob aka Jakwob.

It has to be said though the sound wasn’t ideal for the genre, dubstep definitely needs to make your ears, nose, hell pretty much your whole body reverberate to the beats but you know say we made the most of the situation considering the hefty line up. After our skank out session in the sun to Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy Soundsystem featuring Donaeo we ended up hustling our way backstage to get a little closer to the action just missing Toddla T’s set.

Before we knew it the ciders in the sun made time fly and we heard the last note of South London girls Katy B’s set before Kelis brought her Milkshake to Manchester at which point it’s sad to say we were pretty much finished. Well semi-finished considering we gave ourselves an hour or two of time to get food, fresh and ready to go straight back out to one of the many after-parties taking over the city.

Being the underground lot we are, we decided to check out Phili producer Starkey alongside Virus Syndicate on the mic; the sweat was literally dripping of the walls when we got into the bar and by the time we left in the early hours of the morning, I’m pretty sure we were covered in that very same thing.

Somehow, someway we managed to wake up and head straight to Platt Fields Park just a few hours later and with even more party vibes than the day before!!! Despite the ridiculous amount of rainfall we headed to the Thraser Tent which near enough had us there all day with their line up of forward thinking producers, first up though Emalkay who warmed us up nicely or more accurately threw a load of bass in our faces giving us no option but to get involved.

Redlight and MC Dread stole the show for sure considering the amount of mud we’d been splattered in (although we probably did this to ourselves, in fact, yes skanking from tent to tent, but hey we needed someone to blame). Pretty much everyone played a remix of some sort of Ms. Dynamite’s What You Talking About but of course the original producer smashed it with his refixes alongside just as dirty remixes of Shy FX’s Raver; the set was more than alot.

From one extreme to the other we got a little deeper when we headed over to catch SBTRKT and Sampha who provided a set full of live production which meant current single Wildfire sounded sicker than ever as well as other cuts off the album like Trials Of The Past so salute to the masked warriors they definitely did their thing. After dancing our way from the front of the tent to the back exiting to Dennis Ferrer’s Hey Hey it was all about some homegrown hip hop, well the end of Broke N English’s set in the Juicy Tent. I’m pretty sure that the timings of these tents were a little wrong it couldn’t have anything to do with all of the Desperados we were knocking back could it?!?!

No time to waste anyway, right back into our schedule and yearning for some house and garage vibes L-Vis 1990 took us through bangers from Lil Silva all the way through to Girl Unit just what we needed before braving the rain once again for the dubstep maestro’s Skream and Benga.

Banger and banger poured out of the speakers on the main stage, well more like dribbled; seriously the sound nearly ruined what would have been some epic sets over the weekend so dogding the downpour we felt the Squark calling us so headed back to the Juicy tent for Roska’s blend of all things funky.

Headliners Chase & Status were approaching the main stage though so our rain-free raving didn’t last long as we managed to see the duo move the crowd with their classics from More Than Alot. Then it dawned on us that all we had done all day is listen to warps, wobbles, bass and more electronic sounds I don’t even know the name of so we thought it’s only right to end the festival with the DJ of all DJ’s, Grandmaster Flash. From hip hop to dicso to RnB the New Yorker proved exactly why he’s the king of the turntables and we couldn’t have ended the weekender any better than with a legend of the game.

How the 2012 line up could possibly top 2011’s effort we don’t know but we know we’ll be there to witness it; keep up to date over at The Parklife Weekender Website and look out for the image gallery from this year’s event!!!
