If you thought Scorcher was laying in the dirt with a bullet in his head somewhere in East London you couldn’t be more wrong, that was his character Kamale in the TV show Top Boy, can’t you separate TV and real life? You’re weird.

Top Boy stars Sway, Kano, Scorcher and Asher D came together to record an exclusive cypher while Sway and Kano collaborated on the remix to the fingerless North London MC’s new single Still Speedin’.

Top Boy has dictated the media agenda this week and following last night’s explosive episode we’re expecting more fireworks tonight [Channel 4, 10PM]. Stars of the drama Sway and Kano have come together for the remix to the former’s new single Still Speedin’ and the pair were joined by co-stars Asher D and Scorcher for a special Prose N Percussion cypher for soulculture.

Having reached worldwide trending highs on Twitter last night, Top Boy was clearly a viewing success but how did it shape-up as a drama? Tego Sigel ponders the show’s first episode.

It’s gritty, it’s urban, it’s on Channel 4. The images conjured by what was has become a staple in British film-making were always going to be supported by the casting of Ashley Walters, who has a history of some good, some bad, projects within the genre. As well as the risky casting of rappers Kano, Sway and Scorcher, a decision that fits more in the mould of American film than traditional British drama.

When dealing with a setting so evocative, you go with what you know, and the undeniable acting talents matched with the absolutely incomparable real-world credibility of Walters paid dividends as his character Dushane shone, portraying the moral complexities of the local drug dealing gang member; plying his trade on the streets he was raised, offering the hope and all at once despair that very few artistic interpretations of the London inner-city allow.

A stand-out performance from Kano in the role of Dushanne’s attack-minded number two, draws obvious reference to City of God’s Li’l Zé, while the story’s most apparent victim Ra’nell has more than a little of The Wire series four about him. The first episode of Top Boy showed and proved with minimalist dialogue and a genuine space for contemplation afforded by a great score and the the contrasting visuals of a sun-drenched concrete London, glowing in glorious decay.

A character developing first episode is sure to offer explosions as the series unfolds this week [10PM Channel 4, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday] with Scorcher’s Kamale offering a great prospect, having showed genuine glimpses of quality as he set pace in every scene he appeared. We’re hoping Top Boy can build on its genuinely remarkable start as the series continues but mark us down as enthusiastic followers based on the first installment.
