Youth Music Week: The Sounds Of Music

It’s impossible to understate the importance music has on all of our lives. Remember copping that Michael Jackson album when you were about eight, and how excited you were to listen to it (remember when people still bought albums in fact!)?

So whether Wiley is your thing, you¹re a dedicated dub-head, or a total pop-tart, why rob yourself of the opportunity to get involved with something that makes you smile and maybe even one day, could make you rich?

The National Gallery and charity Youth Music have set up a week of workshops aimed at improving your singing, drumming, mixing and rhythm skills ¬ regardless of what sounds you¹re into. The event has backing from the crème de la crème of UK talent including soul legend Courtney Pine, opera diva Hayley Westenra, Faithless, D&B bad boy Goldie and Beverly Knight (pictured). Recently Bev, one of Britain¹s best singers, gave her thoughts on how singing has impacted her life. “Music represented everything that was joyful in my life,” When we asked the Wolverhampton songstress what her greatest achievement in her 12 year career she replied, “Opening for Prince the O2 arena and jamming with him after the show. It don't get much better than that for me.”

The National Gallery will be split up into six different sections with artwork corresponding to each workshop. If you want to get really cultured, Scratch The Surface is an ongoing exhibition that features a selection of paintings that celebrate the abolition of slavery.

So if you¹re an aspiring artist or you just want to get involved, there¹s no better place to start than here. The workshops are completely free and kick off the Youth Music Week that is set to take the nation by storm, with special events taking place all over England and Wales. For the hip hop and R&B heads among us, the urban masterclass takes place on Wednesday 24 October, with other activities running until 1 November. This is all on a first-come, first-served basis, so get your skates on and register NOW!
