The Dance Off Awards: Taking It To The Streets
Whether it’s the two-step, the grime skank or golden oldies like the butterfly and the Macarena, everyone likes to boogie. With that in mind, we decided to get up close and very personal with former Mis-teeq-er Su-Elise who’s co-hosting The Dance Off Awards to find out just where’s she’s been. Words by Boywonder
The Dance Off Awards is the first event of its kind that celebrates and award the achievements of street dancers in the UK. Showcasing new and emerging talent from around the country, the Dance-Off Awards will be held at the newly refurbished Ocean Music Venue on May 19. With artists such as Justin Timberlake and the legendary Michael Jackson all using choreography to intensify their videos and stage shows, it’s no wonder that a new awards ceremony finally recognises the contribution street dance makes to the music game. We talk to The Dance Off Awards host, Su-Elise, former member of Mis-Teeq.
Alesha has gone onto success in the charts while Sabrina has changed her name to Puma. What have you been up to?
I holidayed and partied a lot and then I decided to finish university.
Can you tell us about your previous dance history?
I’ve been dancing since I was three and I always loved it. I guess the feeling never leaves you. I have a passion for dance.
You’re a regular on the dance circuit and you’ve presented dance awards before. Why do you think it’s important to recognise dancer’s achievements?
When you look at a stage performance, it’s not just about the artist. People don’t realise that the dancers and musicians play a vital part in bringing the performance together.
There’s many talented dance groups out here - which groups are your favourite?
I have to say Image, because I danced with them when I was about 16 and Dre (choreographer) would kill me if I didn’t say him!
How important are choreographers?
Absolutely crucial. A choreographer not only makes up moves, but also envisions the whole performance from start to finish. Choreography isn’t as easy as it looks. It takes a lot of talent and creativity in order to do well.
Can you tell us about your plans to open your own dance school in the near future?
It’s in the early stages. I’m still doing my teaching qualifications but I’ll keep you posted. It’s always been a dream of mine and it’s a way of giving back to the community. I’ve got lots of stuff I wanna do!
Tell us a bit more about getting involved in Dance Off?
If there are any dancers reading this and you feel you have got what it takes, don’t hold back – nominate yourself for a Dance Off Award – you never know where it could lead... Good luck to all the nominees and I’ll see you on the night!
