May7ven: My Birthday Week

RWD caught up with May7ven to find out what she did in her birthday week…

Noticed the week part of the title.. I celebrated my birthday for 7 days exactly and got more than I bargained for!You may or may not know but I was born on the 7th of May, my name is May7ven and my debut single is being released on the 7th of May 08..you follow the obsession?

This week, I was asked to travel to Nigeria at very short notice to meet and perform for one of the biggest families in Music in the world..Marlon Jackson from the Jackson 5, the immediate older brother of Michael Jackson..no pressure.Landed in

Nigeria on Saturday morning and straight to rehearsals, It certainly helps that we are rehearsing on the biggest stage I have ever performed on but to top it all, it was on a beach front, exclusive access to 64 acres of beach in Lekke

Nigeria. I haven’t seen my African dancers for a while, so it was cool to meet up with them again and see how much of the routine they remembered from our last performance. Following the rehearsals, it was off to wardrobe to get measured up and then choosing accessories for the performance and after. Since my last visit to the beach resort on Lekke, I have been upgraded to what they call “a luxury suit” 2 Queen Kong beds, plasma, ipod doc, DVD player, MTV Base Africa, wireless lan, hammock on the balcony plus so much more. For a culturally themed and africanised room, it was pretty high tech and modern. Cut a long story short, the day was exhausting and very hot but the bonus was being able to relax and listen to my music without considering neighbours.

Day 2:

Sunday, the day I get to meet one of my idols. Marlon arrived at the beach with 8 other people one who I recognised as the Black Power Ranger from Mighty Morphine Power Rangers. I loved that program. Marlon was greeted by 3 different groups of African dancers who serenaded him and danced in some fabulous customs and African attire. The introduction was coming and I could feel a bubble in my throat…”Marlon this is May7ven an international recording RnB artist” “May7ven this is Marlon Jackson”..and that was it. The big introduction was all over. He was a perfectly normal, down to earth approachable human being. I have never been star struck but always said if I were to meet Joe, Michael Jackson or any of the Jackson’s that I would probably faint but it didn’t happen and now Marlon and I are buddies.  The performance was the part I felt a little anxious about, in fact slightly intimidating after this guy has the best male entertainer in the world as his younger brother and the best female entertainer in the world as a sister, what could I possible do to impress him?? Then I remembered to just being myself and do what I do best and that was performing, engaging with the crowd and given my all. A few things went wrong technically, like the sound guy playing someone else PA mix after I was introduced and the microphone cutting out in the middle for my power ballad, “NO MORE” but like they say the show must go on. I had on outfit change and put a lot of energy in to my single “Hands up” I announced the song and made the whole crowd join in on the chorus which was cool. Now there is a part in the video where me and 2 other dancers break and start popping, visually this always looks good with more than two people and I had never planned to do this alone or even had time to teach my African dancers so I gambled and starting popping on my own. It paid off and I heard applauses and cheers which is always a good sign. Following the performances were more press interviews, photo calls and a greet and meet the audience. The meet and greet reminded me of my last UK performance at the fabulous kingley club where we had a great bunch of people who were supportive and genuinely showed appreciation for the performance and wanted more. Marlon the guest showed appreciation and clapped me on. As a perfectionist I was far from pleased and always want more and expect more and beat myself up for a few hours about what could have been done with the music, sound and stage performance.  That night ended with me falling asleep on a hammock outside of my room at approx 2am in the morning only to be woken up at 6am to repeat the day by jogging along the beach for 40 mins.

Day 3:

8am, I was told to get ready as we had a press conference with over 30 people from the media and Marlon Jackson. We huddled around the conference table and on the panel was myself, Marlon Jackson, Founder of Motherland Bekons Mr. Wanle Akinboboye, The president of African Music Union, Tee Mah, Walter Jones aka Power ranger, Kareem Muhammad who was Mohammad Ali’s road manager for 20 years, Mayor Gary Lester from the U.S, Mayor Jack Simms also from The U.S, 150 Book Publisher Fred Cleveland, Mayor, millionaire businessman Alfred Dixon and company secretary Estelle Simkins. This is how we were introduced; all of the above mentioned are celebrities in there own right and renowned figures but me, I kept thinking why am I up here sitting with these people? It was soon to be announced. The night of my performance, apparently discussions took place and it was decided that If I would accept they would like to appoint me as one of the board of directors for Motherland Bekons International so that I can be a spokes person and a European representative. What an accolade? Little did I know that they had been watching how I conducted my interviews and spoke passionately about this project that I had nothing to do with and my performance apparently sealed the deal as they described it as one of the best they had seen and thought I had the potential to perform at international level. This was a shock to me but I was pleased to say the least. I gracefully accepted and nodded my head and then the press jumped on it and all sorts of questions came out.   The day went from one press interview to a photo shoot to another interview and pretty much ended there, what a birthday this is turning out to be. We then revealed the first ever Motherland Bekons wine to the media which involved wine tasting all day..Never a bad thing if ya drink! Day 4:After my early morning jog, we were driven to a local airport to board a private Jet. Surrounded by all these millionaires, security guards was intimidating enough but to board a jet without warning was icing on the cake. I boarded a 7 seater 656 in Lagos and flew for 45 minutes to Abuja which s the capital of Nigeria to meet with the minister of tourism at his offices with my new team. This is where I really get to talk about the project, my single and reason I was in

Nigeria in the first place. Again, pictures, press and more press and a cheeky press who caught me off guard by asking me to sing. This is being filmed live on NTA news in front of a potential 50 million homes so in true May7ven fashion I belted out a track by Whitney Houston just to show my vocal ability as Hands Up is not that type of song, it’s more fun and beat orientated. The minister immediately started clapping and asked for a CD, Which I presented to him of course. We left his office for another press conference and I am now thinking, I can get use to this. Just before leaving his office, one of the crew mentioned it was my birthday and from that day till today, they have not stopped singing Happy Birthday to you, May7ven. On return to

Lagos, it was now time for the fun part, radio. We started with Unilag radio and ended up at another station plugging the single, given out CD’s, T-Shirts and performing acoustic sets. We had a few callers on the station who translated the lyrics to HANDS Up to Yoruba, which was Hilarious and a few callers wishing me a happy birthday too.12midnight I was back at the resort and Walter was the first to wish me a Happy Birthday and the rest of the group including Marlon broke out in a song. Sincerely humbled and so blessed to be in the presence of such great people.  May 7th, My Birthday Day!

My Birthday does not mean a lie in bed still I am awoken to run 3 miles to kick off the day. Today I get to meet with the Governor of Ogun State; this is where I am from originally. The whole crew and I travel for 4 hours on car, bus, boat to get there and eventually met with him at is mansion in the state. The press came out in full force today and quickly filled the palace lounge with cameras, lightings you name it. The formal introductions were done and then the legendary Tee Mah played the national anthem on his flute for the Governor, which was spectacular and then I sang a gospel song as the Governor had just lost his mother and it seemed highly inappropriate to be singing Hands Up so I sang “Give Thanks”. This went down well and what do you know, they put me in the middle of the floor and sang happy birthday live eon TV, Radio and to the media present. You know when they say be careful what you wish for as it may very well come true? Well I got more than I bargained for. Myself and my team then went back to the city for a meeting with Glo Mobile who were putting on an 18 city tour in

Africa
this summer. Although the deal had already been confirmed there was still further negotiations to do, and I wanted to do it personally. Following that meeting with Glo, it was of to wardrobe to put on my Gold dress/birthday suit for a dinner presentation followed by a play and then a party back at the beach. We made the dinner, the play where again they audience and cast members welcomed me as I walked in and sang Happy Birthday May7ven but I was dragged out of the theatre by a reporter and photographer for an interview and a shoot. The shoot is now front cover of the magazine. We made it back to the resort at 2am in the morning and attempted to party, but all we could do was eat a bit of cake, drink a little and fall asleep.

Day 6:

Radio Radio Radio. Now I am going to explain how you can be at 4 places at one time. Pre-record your interview, telephone dial in, blackberry email interview and webcam. This was the se up for the following day as I had been triple booked for interviews and each of the stations were at least 2 hours apart so I decided to stay at the beach to work on a few things with Marlon Jackson and Walter Jones, while the team reached out to all the stations and got on when require. Some people call it magic, I called it multi tasking at its finest……

Day 7,

We head back to the UK to be met with sunshine. I know people must be wondering what Marlon was really like as a person and all I can say is that he is one of the nicest celebrities I have come across, he does not even think of himself as a celebrity and describes what they did as the Jackson’s as a Job they enjoyed doing. He advised me to never forget where I came from and to stay humble and keep my feet firmly on the ground. Thank You Mr Jackson!

Pacemaker: Setting the Pace

Behold Tonium’s Pacemaker. No it’s not a contraption that’s been installed millimetres from a geriatric’s heart to keep them in breath. It’s an all-singing all-decking, little black pebble of audio-bliss that everyone’s gonna be talking about. 1Xtra’s DJ Cameo helps RWD get to grips with the 120GB device… words by Danny Walker What is the Pacemaker?
It’s billed as ‘The Pocket-sized DJ system’ and that is the best way to describe it. Yes, the device is slightly bigger than an iPod and most of the audio players on the market but it has features those products can only wet dream about. The Pacemaker lets you mix, play and perform on the move. It allows DJs – both professional and rubbish – to prepare and preview sets. It packs a 120GB hard drive so you can bring your whole music library with you (yes, even your Craig David electro remixes) and to top it all off you can save your mixes and post them worldwide… so your Nan in Canada can hear how you seamlessly synched Sway and Simply Red.

What’s in the box?
Before the courier even left the RWD office the Pacemaker box was already opened. Inside its glossy storage we found the unit itself (looking like something Q would make for Bond to track down a severely-scarred criminal mastermind), strap (for hanging the Pacemaker around ones neck), mini-USB cable (for uploading/ downloading music/ mixes), 3.5mm to phono line out cable (play your set through a mixer), Pacemaker Editor (very easy to use) and a power adaptor (for charging the thing up – which luckily doesn’t take too long). All of which make uploading music – we chose Chipmunk, Skepta and a few Roll Deep classics to start with – playing and mixing music on the go very simple.

How to use the bloody thing?
Once your music is uploaded to the device and you’ve read the basic instructions, the fun soon begins. Double tap the touchpad, select a track and begin to mix, adjust the treble, play tracks backwards and more… [At this point we went to Uptown Records and reluctantly handed over to Cameo]…

Hey Cam. How is it going?
Cameo: Yeah, all is well. I was playing out last night.

So how is the DJ scene right now?
Yeah, it’s good. Really taking off at the moment for 2008 and it’s been a busy year already. We’ve had a couple tracks from the garage/ bassline scene, which have gone into the national chart. Heartbroken, and H’two’O’s What’s It Gonna Be? and yeah, the scene is moving really, really strong. There are a lot of girls coming back too; which is always good.

Where have you been playing?
Leeds, Birmingham… they love it up there. Bristol and Sheffield too, I can’t forget the Sheffield mandem. It’s definitely heating up and Ayia Napa should be massive this year too.

What do you like to use, vinyl or CD decks?
I love mixing on vinyl. It’s the best feeling. It’s the most productive too. Mixing on vinyl you can lock the tracks like no other. With someone like myself though, I get a lot of upfront promos and break new talent and some of those tracks are not available on vinyl so I have to use CDs. Also a lot of the times when I’m playing out the turntables aren’t even setup.

So Cameo you have been playing around with the Pacemaker and locking down a few tight mixes. What do you think of it?
I think it’s amazing to be honest with you. You can have music on mobile phone, iPods and all that but with this you can take it that step further. If you’re a DJ, you love your music or you love beatmatching this is perfect for you cos you can do it anywhere you go. You can use it in a club, you can use it at home. This product really is the future. A lot of people have dreamt it but now it’s here.

What is the industry saying about the Pacemaker?
The DJs are loving it cos we travel around the country a lot, we’re always in cars, in studios and some of the time it can be quite boring. Things like this will hype it up for you. With the Pacemaker, if I get sent a tune I can cue it up before I even get to the rave.

You know you can upload your mixes to the web…
That sounds cool. This will give DJs another outlet to live out their dreams.
Despite being 40GB more than an iPod Classic, is 120GB enough for you?
That’s never enough! [laughs] But I think you’ll be alright.

RWD Magazine’s Upload Project: LAST 8 PLACES!!!

Initialised and integrated in the latter stages of 2007, the Upload Project is proving to be quite a sort after. Being the UK’s biggest youth orientated magazine (we’d like to think) we’ve taken in students from all over these Isles and linking with The College of North East London has proved to be valuable.

The last batch of capables excelled in their media training and got to grips with filming, film and sound editing, photography, post production, lighting, learning industry standard programs, liaising with clients and much much more. A culmination of their polished work has already made its way to RWD TV and we’re proud to announce members of the course have already found jobs within the industry.

As well as meeting a few International stars, industry big wigs and street clebs, the students were encouraged to work to a high standard and enjoyed being involved in RWD magazine features, articles and projects. If this sounds like a bit of you don’t hesitate to call.

Online Review: RWD in Stereo (Thursday 6 March @ Cargo)

The first review is in… words by Danny Walker

Following on from the Camden leg of RWD in Stereo the stage was soon set for the Cargo instalment. Last night’s grimed-out Cellar Door and RWD Magazine organised jamboree in Shoreditch’s Cargo was a stellar (or shall I say Cellar) success. The choice of establishment, the on-point almost shameless self-promotion and mouth watering line up had the place heaving. RWD’s very own Sisters of Swing (grime, and just about every old skool hit you can think of) Hattie Collins and Chantelle Fiddy took to the decks to set the ball rolling for the night. With their seductive selection as tight as their witty writing they dropped everything from H’two’O’s What’s It Gonna Be? to The Count and Sinden’s Beeper Ft. Kid Sister, via the odd unleashing of classics like Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam.

Joining the duo and providing visuals for the whole evening were a fresh faced VJing outfit called the Frame Butchers. Their shiny doppelganger Macbook’s supplied Cargo’s projectors with sharp graphics and a live feed from the stage, DJ booth or wherever their video camera was pointed. RWD take their adidas hats off to the Butchers who truly provided fitting visuals for the – what was soon to be packed – crowd. As the drink flowed the floor filled and the DNA Mix and RAW Music UK showcases were up to bat next.

They came out swinging, with K.A.S.T., Lady Seeker and The Collective soon proving why they’re ones to watch. K.A.S.T. provided a live rendition of his underground heater Where’s Daddy Gone whilst The Collective took us on a journey through London City.

Alex Mills added the next highlight. Mills was minus the dancers from Camden’s …In Stereo but dressed for the occasion – in charcoal evening attire – the Leeds lass gave RWD in Stereo a far from monotone performance. The highlight of her set was easily Gin and Tonic and she left fans wanting more. Luckily she promised that she was indeed working on her long overdue and high anticipated debut album, “It’s coming soon check MySpace.com/alexmillsmusic for the latest.”

Heatwave then effortlessly skipped across genres as Ghetto and Lightning made their ways to the stage. Lightning added the hype to an already hyped Ghetto – who was too dressed for the occasion (if that occasion was a night jog) in a red and royal blue Nike hoodie. Ghetts did a red hot version of Top 3 Selected and ruthlessly unpacked his suitcase of bars. His arrival was the grimey equivalent of the people of Troy letting that horse into their gates. Before we could say “Achilles” the stage was full and mayhem was afoot. Luckily it was organised pandemonium and Ghetto as calling for an “All star set”. Jammer, Ears, Wiley, Skepta, Little Dee, Chipmunk, Frisco and Dollar Da Du$tman passed the mic to each other like a grime relay race. If it were such an event… Chipmunk, Ghetto and Skepta would have finished first, second and third, respectively.

Despite that grimey chunk, NY’s, Wiley’s and Joe Driscoll’s best efforts; the evening’s biggest highlight was The Thirst. The afro-clad lead guitar/ singer Mensah joined his brother Kwame (bass), Mark (guitar) and shirtless Marcus on drums. They rocked and Cargo ate them up as if they were the latest addition to the McDonald’s ever-popular McChoice menu. Those who have not been quenched by this Brixton based quartet you need to get on over to MySpace.com/thethirstrockband, ASAP. A great night was had by all.

For more on RWD in Stereo and pics check a forthcoming issue of RWD Magazine
