Manny Norte: He’s the man
Artist: RWD

We catch up with KISS DJ Manny Norté to find out his secret to the HUGO URBAN RULES success…

First things first; why are you the name we can trust?

My word is good. I represent. You can put your trust in me, have confidence in me that the music comes first. You can even trust me with your girl!

You won a MOBO award winner for Best Club DJ. What’s the difference between a radio and club DJ?
You need to know what’s a good track, and what will get the crowd going. You have to be hot on the ones and twos and you have to let the music do the talking.

Why did you get involved in this year’s HUGO URBAN RULES?
Because like me, the campaign is looking for the next big thing to champion. Plus I’m a fan of the HUGO and I get to chill with the Sugababes (laughs).

The campaign is all about discovering new talent. How were you first discovered?
When I was 13 my dad gave me a double-deck tape machine. You couldn’t get me off of it. I just thought ‘This is me.’

What’s the best advice you’ve been given about the industry?
Love what you do, even if you’re not getting paid for it. If you put in the hard work, you can accomplish anything.

You’ve worked with Nas, Nelly and Mariah Carey. What does someone need to do to accomplish what Manny Norté has?
Keep working and never stop perfecting your trade.

What are the perks of being a KISS DJ?
Free music is the best perk, but you get invited to all the hot spots, get the nice clobber and the love from the females never hurts.

You’re surrounded by a gaggle of girls every month at Jump Off. The aftershave you’re wearing must be working. What is it?
I’m not even lying, HUGO BOSS Selection. I’m killing that bottle.

Do you still get nerves before performing?
I always get nerves and butterflies. I just did a school tour with the Met Police talking to about 400 kids in a theatre and I was shaking before I went on. I’d tell anyone who is performing at HUGO URBAN RULES to give it 120% because it could change your life.

The UK urban scene is finally getting the chart success it deserves. How can we keep it going?
We need to continue to back it and endorse good artists. The DJs are incredibly important in spreading the word. We need to get the tunes playlisted and encourage listeners to buy music.

You’re championing a lot of UK music at the moment. Who is getting the Manny Norté seal of approval?
Kano - he’s got a lot of heat and oozes that swagger. Besides him, Estelle, Sway, Bashy, Wretch 32, Wiley, Skepta, Ghetto, Chipmunk, Taio Cruz, Nathan, and Alexandra from X Factor.

Submit your demos now to Hugofragrances.com/urbanrules and be in with the chance to get your music professionally produced and released and perform live on stage before the Sugababes at the exclusive London event on 3 Dec at Cargo
