In some circles techno has always been a dirty word. Over the years it has become commonly associated with crusties, hippies and brain dead idiots rolling around in an abandoned warehouse off their heads. Along with the unsightly characters the tunes would spin at a brain crushing 185 beats per minute-ouch! Like any genre there are many branches, and sometimes our first interaction with a style can be negative, but fear not for Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig is here to restore our faith in electronic music, oh yes soulful techno!
Detroit has been bubbling underground for over twenty years and is fast becoming a worldwide scene thriving on soulful bashy beats. Craig started creating jazz and soul inspired techno in the early nineties and had unprecedented success with tunes like Bug In The Bass Bin(released in 93’) and has been used by countless dnb producers the world over. Throw (released in 94’) is also accountable for some of the sounds we hear now in clubs. The man never stops and his mix Sessions released early this year, left listeners speechless!
Craig is notorious for sell out shows across the globe, playing festivals, super clubs and for one night only he will take to the needles in the intimate surroundings of east London’s, East Village. Carl will take over the basement at prime time for a two and half hour set! Warming up with a deep set is Bugz In The Attic founder, Orin Walters a.k.a Afronaut. Also listen out for Andy Bird and Stuart Patterson who will be touching down to heat up the basement!
Upstairs in the Deco Lounge catch Richio Suzuki’s Version Excursion team. Kiochi and Taka will open the night with their trademark funky cover versions. plus the UPROCK crew who are a seven strong hip-hop collective fusing jazz/broken beat to whip you into a hip swinging frenzy!
