Bloody Beetroots: 100% Organic

Free from pesticides and full of all that good stuff, Hayley Joyles dines out with The Bloody Beetroots

It’s a well-known fact that if you eat too much beetroot, it will destroy your liver, so we advise you to be careful when you listen to electro punk duo Bob Rifo and Tommy Tea - they’re so hype you may have actual organ failure! Part of the ever-growing family at Dim Mak records, we hooked up for a chat with the Italian Bloody Beet’s. The time was just before Eastenders, with Tommy (performing Beetroot) assuring us his Bianca/ Ricky trivia is on point, having lived in London for a few years. Bob (producing Beetroot) is the excitable, super-punk beat-creator and brains of the operation.

“We are a bit punk in our style and are highly influenced by comics like Max Bunker. At the moment I am loving Sponge Bob Square Pants,” says Bob. Tunes like Dimmakmmunication a remix of Timbaland’s Miscommunication with their chiming chords are totally uplifting. A lot of their music, like C’est La Vie has a euphoric clubbed out vibe while the brand spanking new remix of I Love The Bloody Beetroots is aptly titled I Hate The Bloody Beetroots. Their music-making is testament to the Beets’ ability to spread love at the party without the need for drugs! “The remix was created with a euphoric intention, it wasn’t a casual thing,” Bob giggles. “We’ve pooled all the influences like Daft Punk, classical music and Bob Beetroot!”

When quizzed about his classical favourites, Rifo namechecks 19th century composer Debussy. How he makes the transition from Clair De Lune to the sea-sawing madness of YEYO we will never know! The only answer is that Rifo is somewhat of a genius. “The thing we love about the Beetroots is the unpredictability,” remarks Tommy after he plays an excellent Debussy inspired beat with Robyn lyrics over the top.

Their versatility should not be overlooked, as the duo love nothing more than a wailing guitar and a screaming punk break, the likes of which you’ll find on their remix of Sh*t Disco’s 72 Virgins, which is proving as popular as Steve Aoki’s Bloc Party Helicopter tune. Also T.B.B remix of Flemish band Goose’s Black Gloves manipulates guitar chords to make the tune even filthier.

The Beet’s are already well known across the globe with friends like Peaches and the Crookers who they regularly meet on Hollywood Boulevard for a little mask up and boogie down. On the food side of life, Bob admits that his favourite vegetable is actually the humble ‘carrot’ while Tommy votes for the aubergine. “They’re cool because you can make parmigiana with them,” he nods knowingly. As well as combining a love for fruit and veg with that of electro, they also have a wicked line of t-shirts, with the slogan F**ked From Above in 1985. “The designer supports the Bloody Beetroots, he is definitely going to be big,” explains Tommy of the T.

For all you budding Delia’s out there, know this; the Beetroots are best served behind the decks with lashings of electro filth. Look out for them in a vegetable patch near you.

Rombo is due January ‘09. MySpace.com/TheBloodyBeetroots
