Girlcore: Hardcore
Artist: RWD

Once upon a time at a Secret Garden festival in the deep dark forests of Wales, a group of girls were found contemplating life and where to go after the fest was done. Lolo, Marisa, Karley, Isa and Becci were intent to keep the good times coming, so they took to their car, blasting tunes out of every orifice in a bid to prolong the party. ‘Carcore’ and ‘Partycore’ were discarded for ‘Girlcore’ and the movement was born. Little did they know how much of an impact this sunny day in August ‘06 would have on the party scene, discovers Hayley Joyes…

After the car park incident, the girls set about reigniting the magic and spirit of what had happened that sunny day. They created a community of creative, intelligent females that are both confident in their sexuality and successful in their careers. Following the sparks at the Secret Garden, the girls decided to get together more often. “People were passing us on the street and said we were like a ‘hen night on acid,’” G.C member Kirsten recalls, remembering wild nights out that saw the ten strong posse taking to the streets of London clad in glitter and stickers. From raving together at Lovebox, the group steadily increased in size, Marissa Brickman explains. “You can be Girlcore, anyone can be Girlcore.” The girls were known around town for having raucous parties that resulted in a few broken glasses and one or two ASBOs. It was after a fantastic time out with the girls that they pooled their resources to create their own club night. The event kicked off in February 2007 at Shoreditch’s Catch 22, where the nights became well known for their fancy dress theme and no messing party ethic. From Hardcore Porn to Summer Camp, the G.C crew honed in on what makes a good party without being pretentious. With front bums of the female variety decorating the walls and rubber snakes dangling from the ceiling, fun is at the heart of every night. “The Girlcore vibe is just about having fun,” says stylist Naz Foroodian. When girls get together as kids they play and it is not like you have to act cool or behave in a certain way.”

As well as kick ass themes and outrageous attire, Girlcore are intent on bringing through fresh female talent. The nights are renowned for promoting excellent female acts like New Young Pony Club’s DJs TY and Lou, The-o, Coconut Twins, Little Boots, Charlotte (bugged out) and Marina & The Diamonds. “It is about making sure it is a positive space for girls to perform,” states Kirsten. But don’t get it twisted - boys are welcome to get involved in the Girlcore tomfoolery. A common misconception made is that they are a radical pro-women gathering. On the contrary, argues 22 year-old Karley Sciortino. “I don’t think anyone in Girlcore thinks of it as a feminist movement. It’s funny because we are a group of girls that are together, but it is almost funnier to play on it and talk about vaginas all the time.” During their Hardcore Porn night Lolo told RWD that G.C is “All about celebrating womanhood, we’re not hating on men.”

All the girls’ involved work together to get everyone involved in creative projects. They were invited to host the first part of the iPod battle in London and Paris, and have their fingers in all sorts of cherry pies. Two of Naz’s favourite Girly moments were a collaboration with Laundrette set design to curate a room at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, and a project they did with Run Riot. The group did an installation at Shunt in April that was part of Momma’s Kitchen where Isa GT DJd and the girls gave the room a woman’s touch, leaving gingerbread men and fairy cakes scattered around for the essence of girldom. Gilrcore isn’t a corporate machine, more a friendly network whose main wish in five years time, is just to stay ‘best friends for the duration.’ “When it comes down to it,” concludes Kirsten. “We all really love and support each other,”
