Online Review: Robin Thicke @ Hammersmith
Artist: Robin Thicke

Robin Thicke hit the UK in recently in support of new album Something Else so we made sure that we (+ female companion) were in the house when he took to the stage at Hammersmith Apollo.

Known for his super-smooth-sing-a-girl’s-knickers-off-songs Thicke kicked off proceedings with the exception, not the rule in the form of latest single Magic. The upbeat, throw back track had the audience shaking a leg as Thicke and the live band started things with a bang before quickly following on with the hugely underrated Wanna Love U Girl. From then on in it was strictly for the lovers as the ‘evolved’ singer played the bulk of the laid back material he’s famed for. Mainly drawing from his second LP The Evolution Of… RT performed the first of three Lil Wayne orientated tracks in the form of Shooter which was followed by the LA influenced Cocaine.

Taking in turns to stand at the front of the stage and retire to his piano, Thicke took his seat at the keys to perform Dreamworld from his latest effort before referencing his beautiful wife; actress Paula Patton as he spoke of a world without racism and went on to show his prObama stance with a few choice (and quite explicit) verbals for Dubya. Then picking up the pace again Thicke had everyone dancing in the aisles as he performed the salsa anthem Everything I Can’t Have, which he followed up with the second of his Weezy tracks of the night; the Hurricane Katrina tribute Tie My Hands which Robin produced and sang for the New Orleans spitter.

There was only one way in which Thicke would close the evening and that was with the absolute anthem that is Lost Without You. There wasn’t even a need for singer to approach the mic as the gathered masses sang back every lyric word for word. Now I’m not usually a big fan of encores and I was quite baffled as to what Thicke would do considering he’d already performed his most memorable tracks so I was pleasantly surprised when he returned to the stage to give his renditions of the classic Brown Sugar by D’Angelo and Let’s Stay Together from Al Green, before giving us one last swing of Magic again. The second impromptu surprise was to hear the singer rap (yup!) along to Lil Wayne’s A Milli which served as the curtain call track to what was a big evening full of ‘magical’ music.

Something Else is out now
