Meleka: Go Getter
Artist: RWD

We speak to HUGO URBAN RULES winner Meleka about impressing Estelle, working with the Crazy Cousinz and being very picky!

Hey Meleka, how are you doing?

I’m fine, thank you. And yourself?

We’re good. We saw you perform at ILUVLIVE the other night and we were very, very impressed...
Yeah it was good, but I’m a perfectionist so I think there are some things that could have been better. I’m never 100% happy but it’s probably just me being picky.

Estelle noted your lack of nerves in Manchester’s HUGO URBAN RULES - how did it feel to get that praise?
The fact that her and Sabrina [Washington formerly of Mis-teeq] even spoke to me meant a lot. I appreciate all of the kind words they gave to me cos they believed that I had more to give than just that one night. That’s probably the reason why I’m even here talking to RWD right now.

How did you get involved with HUGO URBAN RULES?
A friend of mine sent me the link, but I’m rubbish on computers so I just sent a CD to the office. When I checked the site, I found out I’d missed the London date but then someone called me to tell me that I’d made the final 15 in Manchester so it all came about in a very surreal kind of way.

How did you find the whole experience?
I was actually really ill when I woke up that morning, so I did think to myself that if I was gonna make the effort to get out of bed then I had to win! But yeah it was very nerve-racking. But we’d had the classes beforehand and it helped us all to feel comfortable around each other and in the situation, so it did make things easier. When they actually called my name I was really happy just to be able to get the chance to perform again cos I love being on stage.

So Meleka tell us about your single Go. Is it a true story?
It’s not a true story. Sorry (laughs). It’s just about somebody, not necessarily a girl just cos I’m singing it, but just somebody who is just unhappy in their relationship. The rose-tinted glasses start to fall off and you begin to see the other person for who they really are, and that they have to go – hence the title!

The remixes are quite popular as well aren’t they?
They’re so diverse in styles that you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who isn’t into one of the mixes. The Crazy Cousinz remix has been very popular.

You’ve recorded another track with the Crazy Cousinz called Miss Me where you address jealous ex’s...
(Laughs) I absolutely don’t hate men. I love men very much – my dad and my brother are men (laughs). Girls are obviously the best, but men do come a close second. But yeah, seriously, again it isn’t just towards a man, most people have ex’s and you know that one day when you’re doing really well that person is gonna miss you.

We noticed you had two MySpaces. Is one of them a fake?
No but I did used to have a fake one. Somebody from America made one which had my picture on it and everything!

Wow, so finally what’s next?

Well hopefully I’m gonna put together an album and just keep the momentum up by writing, singing, and performing cos it’s what I love to do.
