I Haunt Wizards: ‘80s Babies
Artist: RWD

Abracadabra: electro heathens I Haunt Wizards are here to steal your magic wand and cape, or so Hayley Joyes discovers when she meets the Brighton trio!

To the casual observer, it might appear that I Haunt Wizards had read too many Harry Potter stories and have been taking styling tips from David Bowie in the film Labyrinth. Hailing from a small seaside town just outside Brighton, Helen, Dexter and Zac enjoy nothing more than creating imitation ‘80s electro and a spot of web debauchery. These crazy kids also love nothing more than posting MySpace bulletins about their arch nemesis Tobey Maguire who played Spider-Man: “He’s a classic geek,” remarks Dexter who has the ego to match his Noel Fielding-esque bouffant.

Although they only started out a year ago it seems that this threesome have been stuck in a eighties time warp their whole life, “If we were alive 20 years ago that would be a lot more fun, the music was amazing,’ admits Helen. Fresh out of a studio session with Fraser T Smith who helped produce Kano’s Home Sweet Home and a variety of Craig David tracks, the gang have also done an electro mash up of Tinchy’s Stryderman. With tasty remixes under their belts, original material like Along Came Polly and More Than A Friend demonstrate their maturing production skills. “Our influences include T Rex, Aha and Duran Duran,” keyboard extraordinaire Zac explains. With catchy chords and dramatic synthesised drum hits, it’s easy to see how these guys have nailed fun-loving pop electro. In real life, these guys are stepping up to the final part of their A-Levels and music diplomas, giggling about in between part time jobs in Debenhams, M&S and selling light bulbs. From stacking shelves it seems like these guys are going up in the world, but like a fine wine they need to come of age and refine their sound. Do that and we’ll see these Wizards creating chart magic in no time.
