After being wowed by his energetic set as R1's One Big Weekend, we sent Chantelle Fiddy to meet 1Xtra’s ultimate party guy, MistaJam to talk marriage, dentures and being on the tele. Wordsby Chantelle Fiddy
The self-professed 'Hardest working DJ on British radio', MistaJam indeed does a lot. He holds down a daily show on 1Xtra, writes a blog and is also currently appearing on your TV screens as the star of a new BBC Three series.
What are the new projects in the pipeline?
A new BBC Three sitcom called Trexx and Flipside has just started with me playing the role of Trexx. It’s my first acting job for about five years and it’s this crazy sitcom about a rap crew trying to make it big, but things are stacking against them. The easiest way I can describe it would be Fresh Prince of Bel Air meets Only Fools and Horses meets My Name Is Earl, so you know it’s gonna be funny. Don’t tune in expecting to see Adulthood levels of realness though.
What is the worst job you've ever had?
I used to work under-age in a coffee shop kitchen. You don’t know filth until you've seen the state old people leave their cups and plates in after they've eaten at a coffee shop. I’ve seen more than my fair share of discarded dentures.
Any plans for the summer?
This summer is all about the radio for me. I may be abroad with 1Xtra – 1Xtra Loves Summer, but nothing is 100% confirmed as yet. That’s the nature of gigs abroad, nothing gets confirmed until the last minute.
Worst experience on the rise to stardom?
A gig I had in Norway. For some reason, it just didn’t work – people didn’t turn up and those that did kept asking for heavy metal. Not good. It was a shame because I was booked for two gigs over there and the one the night before went off.
Biggest accomplishment to date?
Without a doubt it’s my show on 1Xtra. I’ve always wanted to do national radio from as far as I can remember and even though my introduction to the game came via hip hop, I’m more than just a hip hop DJ. I have a love for most types of music.
Why should we listen to you?
Because there’s something for everyone. And because I work hard to find the best new music from across the broad spectrum of black music so you don’t have to. And because it’s a really good show.
Give me five tunes that never fail to impress the crowds?
In the current climate of everyone being able to jump on Limewire and becoming a “DJ”, I’m not gonna give away my secret tracks. Instead, holla at my manager, book me and see!
Do you play weddings?
I’ve done it before but it’s not something I’d want to try again – the pressure is immense. If you know of a really good, credible wedding DJ, let me know cos I’m looking for one at the moment.
What's your greatest ambition?
To have a long career. I mean like a Wogan, Rodigan, Westwood long career – I wanna be doing this sh*t when I’m 60 too.
