Girl Power: Katy Perry

With celebs like Lindsay Lohan hooking up with their gal pals, it seems like girls kissing girls has never been so popular. Step forward Katy Perry with her US and UK chart topping anthem to Sapphic love, I Kissed a Girl. Emmanuel Ezugwu finds out how the gospel singing daughter of two church ministers became pop music’s new ‘It Girl’...
It’s almost midday in LA but for singer-songwriter Katy Perry, the day has just started as she sips her morning coffee, topped with generous lashings of cream and sugar: “Sweet, like I like my men,” she’s quick to joke, whilst sitting in the back lounge of her tour bus.
Earlier last month, the 23 year-old’s lesbi-curious single I Kissed A Girl became the 1,000 single to top the US Billboard charts. Now that it’s sold over a million copies, you would think that men would be the last thing on Katy’s mind. She already counts Madonna and gossip gangster Perez Hilton as part of her growing legion of fans, while her MySpace page is the third most popular site after Lil Wayne and Rihanna. But romantically, rather than doing a LiLo, Perry is dating Gym Class Heroes front man Travis McCoy. The two met after Katy played Travis’ love interest in 2007’s Cupid‘s Chokehold video.
Given this is our birthday issue, we have to know the best present she’s given McKoy, or vice versa. “When I was sealing the deal, I made [Travis] a huge Easter basket which was very expensive, like in the thousand dollar range“, she confesses excitedly. “It had Crème De La Mer face products, beauty stuff and PG Tips that I’m highly addicted to and cost $250 to ship. He was like ‘Wow’ when he got it so I would say lately, that’s the nicest present I’ve got for someone.” So given she has a boyfriend right now, what inspired her to write a track extolling the joys of girl-on-girl-action?
“The chorus just popped into my head one day,” she says with a raspy chuckle, “but I kinda sat on it for a while because there was a mix of not knowing what to do with this pseudo-taboo song. When the label were contemplating putting this out as a first release, I was like ‘Oh crap, I know what every interview for the first year and half is gonna sound like.’”
Contrary to the single’s theme, Perry has only ever “been with” one girl, and her very first kiss was with a boy who, “tried to swallow my head. Maybe it would have been better if I had tried to kiss a girl instead,” she laughs.
Already underway on a gruellingly intensive coast-to-coast Vans Warped Tour, (hence the caffeine pick-me-up) Katy’s new-found success is pretty surreal seeing as fours years ago she was the gospel singing Katy Hudson. Stranger still, she, along with her brother and sister were banned from listening to secular music growing up due to their parents both being pastors. “I guess some people would call me a rebel now, but I think I’m very myself,” she smiles. Having changed her surname (due to similarities with Hollywood starlet, Kate) Perry has just completed her album One of the Boys, a pop-rock gem full of sharp and candid lyrics which truly reflects her personality.
“I’m outspoken, I’ve never been one to censor myself or anything like that so my parents knew that was coming. They were forewarned,” grins Katy of her outspoken songwriting. “I guess I like to pride myself on not being the normal, awful, bland popstar.”
Coffee and conversation over, I think we can safely assume that Katy is anything but those things.

What will you be doing when you're 80 years-old?
Hopefully I will be living in a large old house with some family members and having my one beer a day, telling stories to my grandkids and watching them grow up.
Who’s your favourite 80 year-old?
My grandma. She’s 86 and she just bought herself a flat screen TV and hooked it up herself. She plays lots of poker and lives in Vegas. She’s f*cking rad!
