DJ Semtex: Who's The Daddy?
Artist:
RWD

Being a dad can be a life-changing experience. In the first of a 6-part series with dads-space.com/RWD, the online spot for all things father-related, RWD and our readers ask DJ Semtex how he balances spinning on 1Xtra with changing nappies. Words by Hayley Joyes.
QUESTIONS FROM RWDMAG.COM:
DJ Dreddy: How did it feel when you found out you were going to be a dad?
I was scared. I said ‘I’m not ready for this.’ I panicked and got nervous, but then I was like ‘You know what, I’m gonna do this.’
Aye: Do you let your kids meet big name artists?
I took my kids to see Dizzee when we did a big festival in Clapham last year. I think one of them really wasn’t bothered, but the other one was in swagger mode.
Little Lady L: Hey Sem, do you miss your children when you are away working?
Definitely. It’s hard because it is part of the job, but they know when I come back I have got loads presents (laughs). I think mums are very lucky because they get to spend a lot of time with the kids; it’s a gift to be able to do that.
Respect: What advice can you give other future fathers about raising a kid?
Good question. You have got to give your kids your unprecedented love and try your hardest to make sure they get a good start. It’s a crazy world right now; you’ve got kids dying on the streets so you have got to do your best to make sure you educate your kids to make them learn everything they can and make them into better individuals than you are. Just make sure you instill that thinking that you can be all you can be in life.
What does Daddy Sem do for fun?
Go to the cinema, go shopping, go to the park and try to go on holiday. I’m not gonna lie I want to spend more time with my family, but you know the work schedule, it’s crazy.
Do your kids listen to your show?
No (laughs) it’s on much too late for them. 10 till 12 on a Friday and 12 till 2 on a Saturday and they’ve got own lives. Hip hop to me is Jay-Z, for them it’s Chamilionaire, so they have got their own tastes.
What is your proudest moment as a dad?
Seeing them both born. When you see a ‘mini you’ coming out with his legs in the air, that is a reincarnation of you. That is definitely the proudest moment of my life.
What’s your thought on ‘failing fathers’?
I know a lot of single dads that put in a lot of work and I think it’s easy for the media to point the finger, but the reality is there are a lot of slack dads out there.
Dads Space (in conjunction with sentforever.com) is sending messages into space for its readers; what message would you like to send for your two boys?
I would like them to know I love them very much and I will do anything for them, no matter how old they are. And I want them to remember the big piece of chicken is always mine!
