B.o.B: Extra LRG
Artist:
RWD

He looks a bit like T.I., sounds a bit like Andre 3000, likes a bit of electro and we at RWD like him a lot. Meet B.o.B. Words by Rajveer Kathwadia
There’s been no shortage of famous Bob’s over the years; Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Bob Monkhouse, Bob The Builder and even Spongebob! But now it’s time to add a new name to the list of memorable Roberts with the latest signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint; B.o.B.
There’s quite a long list of meanings for the name B.o.B as he explains that it could stand for (Ok deep breath) “Bring One Blunt, Bring One Beer, I like Big Old Booties, Business Over Bullsh*t, Books Over Bullets, Banging On Beats...” Though of course most people would link the acronym with a song by fellow ATLiens’ Outkast; Bombs Over Baghdad.
Speaking of Big Boi and Andre 3000, many have likened B.o.B.’s musical style to the outlandish duo, and the young teen has linked up with the Speakerboxxx spitter for his debut The Adventures Of B.o.B. “It’s my life,” B.o.B. enlightens us about his first release. “My soul is on this album. Each song is like its own person, with their own names and personalities.” Just like his mixtape; as well as Hi! My Name Is B.o.B’s hilarious skits, there’s a conscious message as well. “You can tell when you listen to it, there’s a certain intent with everything I do.”
The mixtape which has been released in conjunction with clothing label LRG also showcases the young producer and rhymer’s eclectic influences. As well as Outkast, you can clearly hear how artists such as Eminem and Gnarls Barkley have impacted the youngster alongside some UK acts as well. We’re particularly liking the Amy Winehouse sampling Grip Your Body. “I’m pulling together a lot of elements that I like, kind of like I’m a chef. I like Mexican food, Italian food, Peruvian food, so if it tastes good to me, then it’s going in the pot!”
Someone who likes Bobby’s cooking was another Atlanta native Mr Tip, B.o.B. was first discovered by Southern DJ pioneer TJ Chapman performing at T.I.’s Crucial Club so it was only fitting that things should come full circle and that he ended up being signed to the Trap Star’s label. T.I. clearly has a lot of faith in the newbie as he’s featured on the new single On Top Of The World which also features a certain Kanye West.
B.o.B. has no shortage of big names for his own project too, as well as T.I. and Big Boi, Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker has lent his percussion skills to Fame which B.o.B. can only describe as “f*cking huge!” The album is also executive produced by Jim Jonsin, the man behind Wayne’s Lollipop.
So it definitely looks like B.o.B. is destined for big things and only time will tell if he’ll get to fulfil the following if his seemingly endless acronyms “...there’s never Been One Better, Been One Before or Been One Beyond.”
