Natasha Yi: And Yi Knows It
Artist:
RWD

When Tom from MySpace.com personally invites you to join his new – well back in 2003 it was new – social networking site, you’ve got a special something. From acting in films like Rush Hour 2 and Cradle 2 The Grave to modelling for small companies like Pepsi, her calendar is always full. Natasha Yi tells Danny Walker how to network properly…
Hey Natasha, you’ve been hard to get hold of, busy week?
Hey. Yeah, I’ve been helping to produce one of the most successful radio shows in the US called The Dog House.
And your husband Jeff Vandergrift hosts that...
Yep. After setting records on regular radio, we have now moved the show to the Internet. I’ve also been busy filming a comedy pilot.
Sounds like a lot. We – especially our Art Director – are aware of your work but for those few who don’t know, who is Natasha Yi?
I am a contract killer. People call me when they want their husband or neighbour to disappear. It’s good money.
Come on Natasha, play nice...
OK, I’ve done lots of modelling but my main focus now is acting... but I still do a fair amount of modelling. I just did campaigns with Pepsi, Regis Hair Salons and Marriott Hotels. I also made an appearance in an upcoming Panic At The Disco music video. But I have to pass on a lot of modelling gigs because of the work I am trying to put into acting. It’s not easy, but it’s OK because that is my dream.
When did you join MySpace because to have MySpace.com/Natasha is amazing...
I joined in 2003 or 2004. I can’t remember exactly. Tom from MySpace asked me to join to eliminate all the fake profiles being created. I joined but didn’t really get into it until recently. My schedule was pretty chaotic when I first joined so it was abandoned for a couple years. But I’m on it all the time now!
You’ve also got your own comic, right?
Yeah, it’s called ‘Nat’s Adventures’. Check it out on natsadventures.com.
We will. So do you always watch yourself in Rush Hour 2?
[Laughs] Rush Hour 2 was a lot of fun to shoot. I got cast for the part a week after I moved to Los Angeles so you can imagine how excited I was.
Did you get on with the bigger stars?
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker were as hilarious in person as on screen.
Tell us about your online love life. Do ex’s always hound you on MySpace?
Never... Believe it or not, I’ve only been in two relationships.
What did your security do to your last stalker?
When you have muscles like me, you don’t need security. I flex... they run.
So are you always offered cheese-ridden, Paris-Hilton-style music deals?
That’s funny you ask. I get offered a ‘Paris Hilton-style music’ deal about twice a year. There are so many little record companies and producers that look around on the net for someone with a following. They don’t care whether or not the person has any talent or not. They make a song that they think is catchy and then hide the person’s lack of vocals with reverb and over-dubs. The end result has been a lot of garbage. I would rather leave music to the people out there that are truly talented and it is their passion.
So do you always say ‘no’ to something cheesy?
Yeah. About two weeks ago. A director wanted to feature me in his next film contacted me. I thought the script was pretty cool and I was excited about the other actors that were set to star in the film.
What was the catch? Did he want you to sleep with him?
[Laughs] No. The bomb he dropped on me was that my character was going to have her blouse ripped off, leaving her chest bare, right before she gets murdered. PASS.
[WARNING! SEXUAL INUENDO OVERLOAD] Do you like ‘gadgets’?
[Laughs] I was in LOVE with my new GPS system. But then someone stole it! Now I am always lost!!! By the way, when I find who took it, I’m gonna kick ‘em in the balls!
Ouch. Lastly do you think social networking sites like Facebook and Youtube got you to where you are today?
I think social networking sites are a great way to market yourself. The Internet as a whole obviously gave me the opportunity to reach a lot people around the world. I am not as active on Facebook as I should be, but I would love for you to join my MySpace!
Ohhhh Natasha I just might do that...
