Kid Sister: Ashlee Simpson
Artist:
RWD

She’s sister of Jessica and fiancée of Pete. But who does Ashlee Simpson think she is? RWD attempt to penetrate the girly, giggly, LA exterior to find out…
Welcome to London Ashlee. Soz about the weather...
Thanks, I kinda like it actually (giggles). Well for about half an hour, then I miss the sun. I actually lived out here for four months when I did Chicago. I didn’t get to do too much though, apart from check out Dover St. Market, which I love, and the pubs (laughs)! Fish and chips are good. And I had a chicken pot pie the other day, which was so good.
What do you think of our music?
I don’t know too much, but I love Arctic Monkeys, I’ve loved them from the beginning. Who else? Wiley? No I don’t know him. Amy Winehouse is great of course.
Tell us about getting Kenna to work on your album Bittersweet World?
He’s a great artist and I’d heard some of his music, which I loved. He’s friends with some of my friends, so I thought we should maybe work together.
How was working with Timbaland?
I was nervous working with all those guys because they’re at the top of their game. But they were all great and became like big brothers to me. They’d come up with the beats and I’d work on the melody. But I’ve never worked that late before – like 4am? I ended up bringing a blanket into the studio with me (laughs). I wanted to do something that was a bit upbeat and quirky and fun. A party record (giggles).
Was working with Tim and Santogold like ‘borrowing’ credibility?
I think it’s cool to see us working together. I’m more of a pop/ rock type of girl so it was nice to see them dive into who I am as an artist rather than make me sound like full-on urban. You have the sick beats and who I am and my attitude, so It’s a good mix. It’s definitely a personal record.
How much involvement did your fiancée Pete Wentz have on the album?
None. He would be cute though and come in at the end of the night and listen.
Nice rock by the way [Ashlee has a big-off engagement ring on her left hand]!
(Giggles). Yeah, he did a great job.
How did he propose?
That part I’m keeping secret but he did a great job. I’m very happy (giggles).
How did you meet?
Funnily enough, we met here at the Top of the Pops. It’s so silly. We were already emailing by then, but it’s silly where we met. We always laugh about that.
Does he steal your eyeliner a lot?
(Laughs) He hasn’t been wearing the eyeliner too much recently, but yeah if he had a show or something he’d probably take my eyeliner. He’s great, he’s really, really cool (swoons).
How much of a normal life do you have?
Oh yeah,, I’m able to pretty much have a normal life. Of course in LA it’s difficult sometimes because there’s a million photographers, but that’s about it. It’s frustrating but it’s also whatever, that’s life, I can’t let it get me down.
It must be annoying?
My track What I’ve Become is about the paparazzi and the media and to everybody that has their million opinions that they think are right. It’s like ‘back off.’
What’s next for Ashlee Simpson?
I’d like to get back into movies, it’s something I’ve always loved to do. I’d like to do some acting and them make records. I’d loved to have played Alabama in True Romance. Or Wendy in Peter Pan (giggles).
