Jordin Sparks: Like A Virgin
Artist: No Related Artist

Seeing as this is the ‘Sexual Eruption’ special, we decided to get another point of view on putting out! Who better to talk to than 2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks who has decided to wait until her wedding night before jumping those bones. Emmanuel Ezugwu discovers why...

"It was really cool because I walked on the set and she was sitting there with Chris Brown and I was like ‘I can't believe she's here,’" says a giggly Jordin Sparks, who last year, at the age of 17 became the youngest ever person to win American Idol. "She told me that she loved the song. It was really cool hearing that from one of my peers."

The ‘She’ to whom Sparks refers is none other than Bajan chart topper Rihanna, who came out to visit Jordin during her recent No Air video shoot. The Underdogs produced song, which follows up Jordin's debut single Tattoo, features her and Chris Brown getting pretty darned intimate. Difficult enough with the intrusive camera glare, let alone with the added pressure of having his rumoured girlfriend on set.

"It was kinda weird at first with her watching me, but then I said to myself ‘I have to work and it has to look like I'm in love with him,' so I did just that. And I hoped that she wouldn't kill me," Sparks laughs.

In a way, Jordin and Rihanna's story are not too dissimilar; they're both young, talented and attractive and both spent the majority of 2007 living out of a suitcase. However, the Umbrella singer needn't have to worry about sparks flying [pun intended] off-screen between Jordin and Chris Brown.

"I've got the ring on my finger right now and it has 'True love waits' written on it," says the now 18 year-old about her decision to wear a purity ring until she's married. "People draw a lot of attention to it," she says in bemusement. "I guess a lot of people in the industry are promiscuous." Despite, or perhaps because of this, Sparks could care less about convention. She’s determined to wait until her wedding night before giving up the goods.

"I would much rather give myself wholly to somebody when I'm married to them instead of giving myself to a whole bunch of different people."

I know what you're thinking. Small town girl gets catapulted to fame at a very young age and before you can say Hit Me Baby One More Time she tells the world that she'll stay a virgin until marriage. Didn’t another famous popstar, good girl gone bad say this before?

"Britney Spears started out with an wholesome image and that's how I'm going, but I don't know what happened to her along the way," she sighs, showing genuine concern, before ending on a more upbeat tone. "I guess our music is a little bit different and I know what I believe in and I’ll stick to it. I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to that kind of stuff."

Determined she is; it was only after her rousing performance of country song Broken Wing mid-way through Idol, that 'Mr Nasty' himself Simon Cowell tipped the Arizona born teenager as the frontrunner. And she hasn't looked back since.

However, since winning the comp, things haven’t quite gone as planned. She’s yet to have a No. 1 single, and her self-titled debut album didn't take the top spot either. With the recent droppings of previous Idol alums, many believe that the show could be in for trouble, yet Sparks remains optimistic.

"You can't really compare how sales are now. The industry has changed so much since Kelly Clarkson came out. People were actually buying albums then," she insists. "I was a little bit disappointed about not going to No. 1, but at the same time, I'm very proud of the album. It just went gold, so it's reached the half million mark.” Not bad going! “Yeah, I'm very new to this and I'm growing and have a couple more CD's in me at least. So I'll see what happens, but I’m feeling good."
