Last Word: Janet Jackson
Artist: RWD

She’s back with a new album, a new record label and a new figure. Hattie Collins talks life, love, sex and weight loss with pop icon and she of famous family

Last time you made sweet, beautiful music?

I just released Discipline, my eighth album. It’s a classic 'me' album with a modern twist. The word has several different meanings, the most important relating to the discipline I’ve had to have to do what I’ve done. That started at a very young age. Since I was 7, I had major, major discipline, as did Michael.

Last time you considered discipline could be negative?
I think it could be a negative thing, but for me it’s been great. Because of it, I’ve been able to achieve a lot of things that I wanted to. Having that taught at a young age, granted it took a lot of childhood away from me, but I still have that focus.

Last time you went to the shop or rode the subway?
I’ve never gone on the subway, but I’d love to. There was a guy I was dating who said he’d take me, but we never got around to it.
There are times, very late at night here in New York, we’ll walk home 20 blocks after dinner and have a great time. I love that.

Last time you thought 'Wow, I'm a Jackson'?
Well my life isn’t easy by any means, but at the same time I’ve been very fortunate and blessed to have travelled the world and met all kinds of people.

Last time someone questioned you about lyrics like “I can smell you on my sheets/ Now I want you to punish me?”
I don’t think it’s any different to anything I’ve already done. I really don’t. If some people want to see it as S&M, then that’s their imagination. Who’s to say that enjoying sex and talking about it isn’t womanly? It’s a great part of me, actually.
Even with something someone might say, I can find something sexual in it. It’s not that I try to find it, it just happens that way.

Hmm - last time you watched Benny Hill!
(Laughs) I love Benny Hill. When I was in school it used to come on here at 11pm and I would watch it before going to sleep.

Last time you saw JD?
Oh, today. You know, it’s great working with him - it’s a lot of fun.

Last album you bought?
I’m still stuck on Kanye’s album - I think it’s so amazing. I’m also listening to Alicia Keys and Robin Thicke, Coldplay and I like Amy Winehouse too. And you know who I really like? Natasha Bedingfield. I met her last year and I think she’s great.

Last time you lost weight?
Well, I have a book coming out about my journey through weight-loss and weight-gain. It’s really about my journey and being an emotional eater at times, and what worked for me.

Last time you considered your superstar status?
I’m very appreciative of the awards and sales, but the only thing you will see on my shelves are the charity awards. That’s what’s important to me.

Discipline is out on now
