May7ven: Lucky Number Seven
Artist: May7ven

We meet May7ven, to talk numerology, music and making it. UK, get ready to put your hands up!

First up, you better explain your name!

My dad played professional football, he was one of the best footballers in Africa at the time and he wore the No. 7 jersey. It was also his car plate number and our house number, so when my mum was due to give birth, he prayed that I'd be born on 7 May and I was. My name is pronounced May Seven – oh and my sister was also born on the 7th!

For those that don't know, tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a singer, songwriter and dancer born in Nigeria but have been in the UK since I was eight. I have been working professionally in music since I was 15; doing backing singing and writing for established artists and artists on the verge. I set up a recording studio at home two years ago and started producing and writing music for myself. I also play the drums, love football and I’m mad about video games.

Tell us about some of the artists you’ve worked with?
My favourite has been Blu Cantrell onstage and Jamelia in the studio. Blu is an amazing singer and Jamelia in the studio just goes in the booth and gets the job done. I give credit where credit is due. Joe is may favourite out of them all and happens to be one of the nicest people I have ever met.

You have been doing this a while - how have you kept the faith throughout it all?
Without God and me having faith in him and my abilities, I may have given up. He put me in places where I can make music and reach out to people all over the world.

What's been the biggest risk you've taken in your career?
I’ve gambled and sold everything; my car, my house... I was almost homeless at one stage. But I don't think about failing as I have the best guide in the world and that is my faith in God.

Tell us about your single Hands Up?
It’s a club track about how I like to get down on the dance floor and an anthem to get everyone to put their hands up and dance. It is an introduction of May7ven and an indication of what is to come. I believe and trust that it will do well and meet my expectations.

Who are you working with both on the single and the album?
Right now, I have the hottest producer Step producing all club type bangers and next month we fly to Nigeria to work with Sheyi Pedro.

What are you bringing to the world of UK urban?
I want to change the way music and urban artists are perceived in the UK. I am an entertainer and want to entertain and bring excitement when onstage or when you watch my video. I want you to come to a May7ven show and leave satisfied that you have been entertained by a passionate singer-performer who is taking on the music industry and making everyone put their HANDS UP.
