Flo Rida: Go With The Flow
Artist: Flo Rida

He’s a rapper/singer, from the south of the United States and his debut single features T-Pain; yet Flo Rida is far from your typical artist, he tells Emmanuel Ezugwu...

With a name like Flo Rida (named after his place of birth naturally) you could be forgiven for thinking that 28 year-old rapper/singer Tramar Dillard has a tendency towards stating the blooming obvious.

However, providing clout to that age-old adage, looks can be deceiving, Flo Rida is well versed on exceeding expectations. In a surprising coup for a brand new artist, his debut single Low has given him the number one spot in the Billboard Top 100, Hot RingMasters chart, Soundscan’s Digital Song chart, Napster, Rhapsody, MySpace and became the most downloaded song in iTunes history. Some may see the single’s success as being down to T-Pain, who guests on the hook. “I definitely have to put credit where credit is due,” Flo Rida says. “But I have to big up myself - the combination has made this No. 1.”

Rida was born poor in the rough projects of Carol City, the youngest of seven sisters in a single mother household. Though he was always into music, it was the sudden death of his sister that forced him to overcome his crippling shyness and pursue a music career. “It affected me on a positive level,” he reflects of his sister’s death to bronchitis. “It taught me to take advantage of every day because it’s not promised. She was one of the greatest people in the world and for her to be here yesterday and then gone motivated me to have faith.”

His first big break would have seen him under the guidance of DeVante Swing when the budding manager and Jodeci pin-up took Flo Rida under his wings. “A lot of times I hear very negative things about him but when I lived there it was all positive,” he insists of the man who also worked with Missy and Tweet. The partnership failed to materialise, but things have now come full circle and for his second single taken from his forthcoming album Mail On Sunday, Timbaland provides the production honours.

Is he overwhelmed by his achievements so far? “The little things I’ve accomplished and the little that I’ve done hasn’t been easy but I know I’ll make it through. That’s why I stayed persistent and never gave up. ”
