Whether Estelle is going to sell 8million albums, win over not only the US but the entire world and generally, finally and emphatically put UK urban firmly on the map, we can’t say just yet. But we can confirm that this is really quite a fantastic album. A near-flawless record, Shine is stuffed full of sublime musicianship from the likes of The Leg, Clef, Swizz Beats and Cee Lo, while ‘Stelle provides the immediate melodies, gorgeous harmonies and some witty wordplay (To Kanye: ‘Tell ‘em what gwaan blad,’ and ‘Wrap it up cos I ain't carrying your embryo…’). The west Londoner demonstrates not only a great singing voice and an obvious ear for songwriting, but she displays a real take-no-prisoners attitude too; she ain’t playing with this one. The only low is in the slightly messy Magnificent, but other than that expect back-to-back bigness.
