1X Hits Coventry... (Video Inside)
Artist:
Wiley
Not even the icy, arctic Midlands winds could keep RWD from heading up to Coventry this weekend. When 1Xtra arranges a line-up like this, we know we have to get there... and quick!
Featuring performances from Craig David, Jay Sean, Estelle, Taio Cruz, Akon, Lupe Fiasco, Wiley, Kelly Rowland and Chris Brown, it's no wonder the indoor bit of Cov's Ricoh stadium was packed to 4000 capacity. Throw in surprise guests like Kano (who showed up to be Estelle's American Boy] and Sway (who popped up on both Akon and Lupe's set) and you know the night was a big one.
Backstage, Kelly Rowland talked boob jobs, her admiration for Craig David (yeah, in that kinda way) and working with T2. Estelle admitted to wanting to squeeze Chris Brown's cheeks, regardless of Rihanna, while Lupe insisted he will be retiring after his third as-yet-untitled album. Onstage, Akon announced what we at RWD told you about weeks ago - Sway is now an official signee to Konvikt Music. Well done to both and big up to Akon - one of the very, very few US performers (including Lupe, John Legend and Chamillionaire) to take a real and proper interest in our music!
Meanwhile, the entire underground scene (Danny Weed, Wretch, Chipmunk, Westwood, SEmtex, DJ Q, Platnum's Aaron) turned up to watch the show. One of the highlights had to be Wiley and Skepta premiering the Rolex Sweep, the new dance to accompany future Wiley smash Wearing My Rolex. While it looks like Eskiboy maybe needs a few more lessons in dropping what has already become known as 'the ghetto Macarena', the crowd loved the moves and there's already tonnes of people doing their version of the dance over on YouTube (watch for RWD's coming soon!).
Check the guys live:
Big shout out to 1X for this fantastically put together production. We hope there's another one really, really soon!
