Congrats To Estelle...
Artist:
Estelle
What a weekend! Not only a fantastic Saturday night in Coventry thanks to 1Xtra (more on that later), but on Sunday, Estelle hit the No.1 spot on DOWNLOADS ALONE with the Kanye-featuring American Boy. She not only held Madonna off, but knocked Duffy out the way to take the prestigious placing.
Estelle is one of the very, very few to attain the top spot by download alone - Rihanna's Umbrella among the most recent, with Gnarl's Barkley's Crazy being the first.
When we saw Estelle at the 1X show on Saturday, she was hopeful but reticent to celebrate... just yet! "When I see my name next to the No.1, then maybe I'll believe it. But as of today, it is No.1 on downloads alone, so that's enough for me to celebrate. I don't advocate alcohol, but I plan to get drunk and dance on a few tables with as much champagne as I can tomorrow," she laughed. "It's taken a long time to get here, 10 years, so I'm ready to celebrate."
As for the implications for the scene at large, and Estelle was similarly happy and hopeful that UK urban music's time is returning once more. "I'm very happy that people know we're still alive out here and they know we're still here, making music. There are still artists out there worth investing in out here, you know?"
Estelle, we raise our glasses to you - well done girl!!!
