Snoop Dogg: Back in the Dogg House
Artist: Snoop Dogg

Every time you wonder whether Snoop can do it again, the iconic rapper, football coach, actor, father and husband comes back with another banger. We love Sexual Eruption so much that we officially decided to dedicate the entire issue to it! Hattie Collins finds out what’s going on in the world of Snoop Dogg, beotch!

First up, Snoop, there's a lot of heat surrounding the new album - how are you feeling about the record?

I’m Ego Trippin’ – I’m feelin’ real good. DJ Quik and Teddy Riley did their thang on this record and I got hits for days. Sexual Eruption really knocked the door down for a solid album, but be on the lookout for the next single Life Of Da Party with Too $hort and Mr. Fab. We just did the video in Vegas and it was crazy. Also watch for Neva Hafe 2 Worry - there’s a lot of hits to follow for all the Snoop Dogg fans.

How does Ego... compare to the rest of your records?
I get better with age, ya dig (laughs).

What do we learn about Snoop Dogg on Ego Trippin'?
What don’t you? You’re always gonna get hits, but this album, from top to bottom is reminiscent of Doggystyle, just with the perfection of production and raps. You have to buy that sh*t on 31 March and tell me what you learn. But I guarantee it’s gonna make you think about what you just listened to. I’m tryin’ to stay timeless cause I’ve been doin’ this for 16 years and I plan on doin’ it for another 16!

You’re working exclusively with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik right?
Not exclusively, but QDT (Quik, Dogg, Teddy) put their hands on this and that’s what I’m talking about - from top to bottom it just bangs. I hooked up with Teddy at the VH1 Hip Hop Honours this year and I’ve known Quik for years. Shout out to both of them.

Presumably Teddy inspired you to pick up the vocoder?
No, Shawty Redd out of Atlanta wrote the track. He’s blowin’ up right now and is real hot.

Were you ever cautious because of getting T-Pain comparisons because of it?
Never. Zapp and Roger [Troutman] were around a long time before T-Pain.

Did you miss working with Dre?
What makes you think we stopped?

So will you be on Detox, if it ever drops?
What kinda question is that?

How's your relationship with Dre these days?
We cool.

Why did you decide to sing so much on Ego Trippin’...?
I been sangin’ for years. Beautiful? Lets Get Blown? I got so many more.

We love ...Eruption so much, we've dedicated the whole issue to it...
(Shouts) CHHHUUUUUUUUCHHHHHH!

What's sexy to Snoop? What's not?
Women... a lotta things (grins).

Can you school young ‘uns on seducing the lady laydeez?
Honestly, it’s something you’re born with (laughs).

What's the most romantic thing Snoop’s ever done?
Renewed my wedding vows.

Groupie love these days - do you play or say nay?
I say nay. I’m very happy with my wife Shante and my beautiful three kids.

At one point during the late '90s, early '00 No Limit days, your star didn't burn as bright as when you debuted...
I ain’t never went gold. Doggystyle is a classic, but I always brang heat.

Yeah, but a lot of people had started to write you off. How did you manage to climb back to the top?
I ain’t goin’ nowhere, like I said, 16 years and counting. Who else in hip hop been doin’ that? I can count them on one hand.

How much do you credit Pharrell, who provided you with Beautiful and Drop It Like It's Hot, for your return to the top...
Return to the top? I been at the top – shout out to Skateboard P for bringing the heat on Set’s Up off Ego Trippin’. We make hot music and that’s what we do. I make records for people. When I go out, I look and see what records people like, how they react to certain records, so that makes me know how better to put my records together. I don’t focus on egotistical sh*t, I focus on records that hit you in the heart and that make everybody feel good.

What do you say to critics who say you’re sexist?
F*ck ‘em. Haters will be haters. There’s a lot worse things going on in this world, let alone this country, for people to be judging me on one word. Don’t blame me for words that have been around for decades, ya dig?

You know the UK has a lot of love for you, how did you feel when your visa was revoked after the incident?
They can’t hold me back; I’m a be there before you know it. Great Britain be on the lookout for the Bigg Boss Dogg, chuuch!

Tell us about your memories from the days of Death Row?
Fun, you know? It was just fun. Whenever I hear those records, it’s easy to sing along with them because it was just fun. I’m very excited for what I’ve done and doing and what I’m trying to do, so anytime you can sit back and see people enjoy your music it’s... it’s a feeling I can’t really explain.

Our favourite Snoop track is Ain’t No Fun... What’s yours?
Nah, I like all of them. Psshw. It’s too many of them. I did records with Tupac, with Dr Dre, Dogg Pound, The Dramatics, Lennie Williams, Charlie Wilson...

What about your favourite collabo then?
Probably Tupac and Stevie Wonder. I did work with Tupac when he was alive and I worked with Stevie too. I grew up a fan of Stevie, just loving how he made music that matters. That’s someone that’s an icon to me. I ain’t did half the work he done. He made music from the ‘60s to now? And good music; party music, think music. That’s the status I’m trying to get to, so to work with Stevie, hopefully it would have rubbed off on me!

What’s been the secret of your 16 year success, Snoop?
I don’t know (pause). Snoop Dogg is a superhero. He from another planet! I don’t know why people like me, but I appreciate them and love them for loving me.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
That you can do it how you want to do it just do it till you’re satisfied. I ain’t satisfied yet, so I’m a keep doing it. Till I’m like 70 years-old and can’t do it no more (laughs). I ain’t gonna stop.

Sexual Eruption is out now. Ego Trippin’ is out 31 March
