London’s Astoria to Close

Mayor announces end…

The Astoria is one of London’s premier live music venues but its future has been under threat since 2006 when the Mean Fiddler group merged and were no longer in charge of its upkeep.

Plans for London’s development in anticipation of the 2012 Olympics has meant that the proposed construction of a new underground line will take route right through the central London area where the Astoria sits.

‘Save the Astoria’ campaigns it seems have been in vain as the mayor officially revealed that the Astoria could not be saved, "There are some instances where that just physically isn't possible. The construction of (new underground railway line) Crossrail means that the Astoria can't be saved."

The venue has played hosts to acts such as Kano and with the recent closures of Hammersmith’s Palais and The Spitz in East London, the future of live music in London, it would appear is at risk

According to Mr Livingston, he is planning a “live music strategy” for the capital but only time will tell how such plans materialise.
