TXT Back: Craig David
Artist: Craig David

From 1999’s Re-Rewind to 2007’s Trust Me, Craig David has seen it all. Danny Walker heads to north London to ask him your questions on his music, his look, Bo Selecta and whether he’s dated his fans?!?! No stone is left unturned...

Alberto, Spain: How do you feel the night before your new album is released?

It’s a cool feeling when you get the opportunity to finish the album. It becomes something that represents you and something you’re proud of.

Tina: I think Trust Me is some of your best work yet, but some of the critics and consumers have given it very harsh reviews, to put it nicely...
Criticism for me... I take it on the chin. Some people are gonna like your stuff, some people are gonna dislike your stuff. Some people are gonna like me, some people are gonna dislike me.

RWD: Were you relieved that Hot Stuff did so well?
I was really happy with the chart position; it was more that I was really excited about it. The reason I called the album Trust Me is cos I said to the record label, ‘Look, let me make this record the way I want to make it.’ They respected that and to see the response to the first single and the response to the album, I’m really happy it’s turned out to be so cool.

Corri: She's on Fire describes a girl who is "finger lickin' like soul food." Is there any food that makes you want to lick your fingers? If so, what is it?
Boy... Kentucky Fried, you can’t really go wrong with that. Saying that, you could get some stewed chicken and some rice and you’re good to go... and some plantain, that’s going to put you to bed, nicely.

Tasha Taylor: What is your opinion of R&B/hip hop today?
It’s always ever evolving and at the end of the day there’s always new strands, new styles, new scenes and new areas which have got there own sounds. The latest are the likes of Rita Ora – who is a young girl who performs on the album – Kano, Dizzee Rascal, Sway, Wiley , Ghetto er... JMC [Ed: We think he means JME]. There are so many good people coming through so it’s vibrant I think.

John Graham: Who do you feel is next to blow?
I like the grime scene. It’s one of those things that if it gets too commercial the underground sort of brings it back into line. With me I’ve always waited for it to come a little bit more melodic and with T2’s Heartbroken it’s starting to go back to where it was before.

T BREEZY: How has dat Bo Selecta guy affected ur career?
It was something that frustrated me at the time and I was kinda upset a bit. So I put it out there, that little guy was a bit of a fool and he was like a one trick pony. But it’s something that is very much in the past for me now. I’m just about putting out new music, keeping it fresh and have people talk about the music instead of some old skool comedy sketches.

Feven: CD fun hey, Craig I have a big fun of u. And I’m from Africa, from Eritrea. Nice work I hope to meet u one day. Why do u look like 40 when ur only 26? luv u!
[Laughs hard] Thank you. It’s nice to meet you too. Erm... to be honest I don’t really recognise that I look that old. I mean maybe I do. Maybe you’re seeing me slightly different.

Alex 101: Did you pump up to impress Kano?
[Laughs] If I was pumping up for Kano it would be a completely different story. Nah, it wasn’t for Kano, it was just a personal thing.

Gulcan: Would you ever date a fan? I'm available ha ha...
I’m not too tough into the dating a fan. There have probably been a few girls along the way that have styled it out so well that they weren’t fans... on that kind of angle. But dating a fan, being the abbreviation of fanatical... sitting down with someone who is fanatical next to you is probably not the hottest look in the world.

RWD: There was talk of you dating someone from MySpace, is this true?
That’s another thing that comes from the likes of the News Of The World; the tabloids just want to sell papers.

Sean: Are you ever going to attempt another garage-y sort of song again?
Yeah, I love the garage stuff and there are a couple of garage tracks that are in the pipeline. I’m just kinda waiting for them to see when we wanna push it out there. It’s exciting to think people want me do so something like that.

Paul Stubbs: Craig, do u have a PS3 or Xbox 360?
I’ve got both but I’m an Xbox 360 man. I don’t know why and recently I’ve turned into a Pro Evo man too. I’ve played Kano a couple of times, he’s cool. He thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is. Trevor Nelson wanted to play me but… one minute he was saying he was good at Pro, next minute he was saying he hasn’t played in a long time – that old chestnut. So if anyone wants to bring it... come.

THE ADDICTION ISSUE: Have you ever been addicted to something?
At one point I was – well, I still am – addicted to buying records. I love buying vinyl. It’s like I can’t go into a record store and not pick up a few pieces of vinyl. I’m addicted to buying adidas superstar IIs too. I like having a box fresh pair always ready for that special occasion!
