Text Back: Nicole Scherzinger [UNCUT!!!]
Artist:
Nicole Scherzinger
So no-one can pronounce her name, but that didn't stop loads of you texting questions to our super-sexy Nokia N81. You wanted to ask NicoleShz, Szher, Sczh… oh, forget it, the hot one out of Pussycat Dolls, all about her solo career and whether she'd do your laundry. We find out the answers....
RINGS: How do I pronounce your name?
Nicole: (Laughs) It just looks kinda crazy with the Sch and the Z and the G, right? You say it like 'Cher-sing-a'. It’s the name I grew up with, so I just kept it. I figured if Christina Aguilera, Arnold Scharzenegger and Natalie Imbruglia kept their names, then maybe I’d be cool with mine. But I also knew I would be so big one day that everyone would just know me by my first name.
Joyce: You're known for having a hectic schedule. How do you survive on three hours sleep?
I wouldn’t recommend it, that’s for sure (laughs). My brain is kinda crazy so sometimes it’s hard for it to rest, so yeah, I get on average about three hours. For me, it’s mind over matter. I get such a high off of everything I do that I just manage to pull through.
Jess: How are you finding the solo life?
I love the girls and I feel great when I’m with them, but it feels right to be on my own now. This is what I’ve been working towards all my life. We devoted a lot of time to make PCD successful first, but it was a platform for me to go and do my solo thing. I always knew I was going to do it. As soon as we finished the album, I started working on mine while I was on tour. I took two years on it to make sure it was right.
Joyce: How was working on your new album, Her Name Is Nicole?
You really get to know about me on this album. People are used to seeing this strong, fearless, independent side of me, but a huge part of me is that I'm very soft, vulnerable, spiritual and hopeful person. I’m really happy with how honest and how truthful the album is. I thank heaven that I got the opportunity to do music that I love and I feel reflects me as an individual, not just another person in front of a brand.
Poonam: Who's on the album?
I worked with Sting, Polow The Don, T.I., Will.i.am, Akon, Neyo, Futurecut, and Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. Gary had the song, I heard it and it was beautiful. I was played that song and I knew I had to have it, that I had to make it my own. So that’s what I did. He’s lovely. I could tell his essence is throughout that song. He’s a very special, gifted person to be able to write music like that.
RWD: There's quite a lot of British people on there? How did you get Futurecut?
Well, I’m obsessed with Lily Allen who works with them and, I don’t know how I had the balls to do this, I didn't know these people, yet I went up to the studio and within five minutes we’re writing together. Then I ended up staying three days without sleep and you get all these amazing songs and build a great relationship. I love British music; I’ve known about Amy for quite some time and obviously Lily is marvelous, I’ve always been a fan of MIA…I love British fans and British music. I love the whole style here and people are very artistic; they do what they want and they say what they want.
JL_crack: What is happening with your promo? I love you so much, but your record label is not doing the right thing with you.
Yeah, I don’t know how it works these days. I’m probably the wrong person to ask, because I’m so in love with it. I put my whole heart and soul into it. I’m cool that Whatever You Like> (Ft. T.I.) didn’t take off as firs,t because it’s such a special song, so it doesn’t matter to me because I loved it and I’m proud of it. I’m on this rollercoaster to see what happens next. But I feel so confident and so solid about this album that I know there’s a song on there for everybody.
RWD: How hot is T.I.?
Let me show you a picture (pulls out phone). He’s so gorgeous that I didn’t want to stand next to him. This is when we were on set. And I love Lil Wayne too.
I was so excited to do the MTV thing with him, and when I met him I was so psyched cos I fell in love with the kid. And you know what, he was so humble, he didn’t have this chip on his shoulder, he was totally cool. That made him so real and even more likeable. Same with T.I.
RWD: What did you think about his arrest?
(Pause) I only knew through interviews, but I haven’t seen television or anything so I can’t comment on that.
SUPER/ 07984: Will she come round and do my ironing?
(Roars with laughter) That’s hilarious!
SUPER/ 07984: Can I stick me beep in your beep?
(Laughs again). Wow. I mean, honestly, about me and dating etc., I don’t date a lot. I just don’t, I never have done. I’ve always been quite reserved in the way I was bought up. I’ve been more in long-term relationships in the past. Plus I haven’t really had time for relationships in the last few years, which is really hard. I’m really open to a great person, but I know now isn’t the right time.
RWD: Didn't you recently say you fancied Ryan Gosling?
They put that in the magazine? Oh gosh, how embarrassing. He’s going to think I’m the biggest tool. Oh jeez. Why did I open my big ole mouth? I just meant, people like that, you don’t think they’re real. I’m in my own world doing my thing, and they’re like fairytale world. So if I put that out there like that, I didn’t think they’re going to actually print it, or that he’ll hear it or I’ll ever meet him. Oh my gosh I’m so embarrassed now, I hope I never meet him. If I meet him I’ll have to say ‘Hey, look, I don’t like you that much, I just thought about Notebook is all!’
Tony Black: Is it true you were supposed to be in the Black Eyed Peas?
Will asked me to be in BEP a long time ago. We’ve been friends for years, but I was in another group at that time and so I wasn’t able to do it contractually. But it didn’t matter because Fergie is the perfect Pea and I guess I was meant to be with PCD.
: If you're weren't singing or dancing, what would you do?
I’d be a teacher for special-education kids. My aunt is Down Syndrome and I think she’s about the most righteous, amazing angel I’ve ever met in my life. She inspires me, and I think that would fulfill me. It takes a lot to fill my glass, but I think those special kids would fill that glass for me.
Summthin88: If you could work with any artist, living or dead, who would it be?
The woman who inspired me to sing when I was a little girl was Whitney Houston. And now she’s making her comeback, so yeah, Whitney. She's actually in London right now. I haven’t seen her, but when I got offstage at Fashion Rocks, I was so excited and jumping up and down, that my best friend almost fell over her. If I had seen her, I would have tackled her to the ground. I met her once and I cried. She’s the only person I’ve ever reacted like that to because she’s been my inspiration from the beginning.
Babylove: Any messages for your fans?
I want to make sure I say thank you to my fans. I want my fans to know that I put my whole heart into this album, I’m giving everything to them on this album. I hope they feel that and they can connect with that, and in turn feel closer to me. It’s different from the Dolls, but it’s me. You’re going to get the real me. There's a lot of fun sides to it, so hang on for the ride!
The album is out in January, Baby Love is out now. Hernameisnicole.com.
TECH SPECIAL
Fave piece of tech?
My Blackberry Pearl, because it’s my phone and my means of communication. When you’re in this industry, you lose touch with everything, plus I don’t have a separate phone, just this, so it’s right there.
What do you wish someone would invent?
Something that would make it so that another piece of equipment couldn’t burn my CD so we could stop piracy!
Most overrated piece of tech?
PlayStation. I don’t even know what that is. My sister is like Guitar Hero Champion, but I don’t get it.
