RWD Meets: Kojo
Artist: RWD

Kojo has been responsible for much belly aching laughter to his audiences since he first started in 2000. With his first stand up show being premiered on MTV Base tonight, Emmanuel BoyWonder Ezugwu talks to London’s most well-connected comedian

Tell us about the show?
Well it’s from a show I did at the Hackney Empire and it was the first time I was doing a one man show. I’m from East London so the show was basically about me growing up dealing with family, girls, party and just random stuff that kind of connects with Hackney.

Why did you call it The Fresh Prince of Hackney?
The title came about because I’ve been in foster care since I was 5 years old and the title came about as a take on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It was abit of tongue in cheek because Will Smith grew up in West Philadelphia to suddenly living with his relatives in Bel Air. it was a great night and it sold out.

How long did it take you to write the show?
I’d say around three months in terms of writing material for it. I used old material but wrote a lot of new material also.

How did you get into comedy?
The comedy thing started in 2000. I used to play football and work with kids alot. I was in Camp America and I didn’t know what stand up comedy was but started getting into it.

UK comedy is seen as lagging behind when compared to its UK counterparts. Why do you think that is?
I just think its lack of opportunity really and that’s It may not be comedy in terms of comparing the UK and US.
I’ve been over and performed in the US and get the same response as I do in the UK. When American comedians come over here to my comedy club they love it. I recently had Dave Chappelle on there and he was blown away by the talent. I think in terms of support we don’t really support the UK comedy scene as Americans like to support there’s.

Who would you say is the UK's next big thing, comedy wise?
To be honest I don’t thing anyone has been doing what I’ve been doing for the past 7 years which is bridging that gap between the UK and the US. I’ve brought a lot of US comedians over and help give UK comedians like Baba Tunde a chance. I would say there’s a lot of people to look forward to though.

What advice would you give to aspiring comedians?
I would say study the game because being funny is one thing and being a comedian is something totally different. There are a lot of people who are funny but being a comedian is an art. You have to have timing, be observant and know your crowd.

MTV Base brings you The Fresh Prince of Hackney tonight at 10:30
