Alison Hinds The Queen of Soca
Artist:
Alison Hinds
With her energetic performances, unquestionable femininity and powerful voice, she is truly a Soca Queen in the eyes of many. Being the first female artist ever to win both Caribbean titles of; Road March of the Year and The Party Monarch, her latest single Rol it Gal is fast becoming an anthem of empowerment amongst women; “The song is most definitely about female solidarity and appreciating woman as they are”. The curvaceous singer also encourages women to be proud of their bodies and does not feel any pressure from the industry about the way she looks; “I’m proud of my curves, this is who I am and the way I’ve been built. I hope I can be a small example for woman like me to feel proud to show their curves and to say ‘Yes, I can be beautiful too’”.
Originally born in London, she moved to Barbados with her mother, when she was just eleven years old. So impressed by Barbados’ annual Crop over festival, her passion for Soca music inspired her to enter a talent competition, where she caught the eye of Calypsonian Anderson Armstrong, who asked her to sing lead in a band called Square One. Together they had hits such as Raggamuffin, Twister and Togetherness.
After amicably leaving her original group Square One in 2004, the talented singer/ songwriter got married and gave birth to a daughter, which she says gave her further inspiration and drive to produce a solo album. The Soca Queen herself is currently getting ready to release her album in the UK on the 26 November.
Expect Soca Queen to give you a mix of Soca, Reggae and slow ballads. The album was recorded live with a full band bringing the Crop over experience right into your living room. The first single from the album; Roll it Gal is out now and don’t forget that Soca Queen will be in stores from 26 November.
