Kanye The King
Artist:
Kanye West
After weeks of bragging and big talk from both sides, Kanye West officially beat 50 Cent to the top spot today - in the UK albums at least. American charts will be available tomorrow, but reports suggest Kanye will do around 750,000 to 50's 550,000.
Kano fell shy of the top 10 by entering the charts at No. 14. Well done Mr. Robinson and shouts out to all the people - including many of the RWD forum - who bought London Town.
But back to US rap, and what does this mean for 50? Will he retire? Highly unlikely we think, but we imagine there will be some shame in his game after talking so much and yet not quite delivering. He has apparently been telling reporters that he hasn't enjoyed the process of promoting this record - so maybe he'll concentrate on new signings like Jim Jones?! Rumours are still rife that the Dip Setter is set to join the Unit. More news when we get it.
Anyway, thank goodness for this rap battle - at least we finally see some serious sales in the rap market. While record sales are generally down 17%, rap sales are plundering around the 27% mark, surefire evidence that hip hop heads really aren't trying to spend money on music any more. Like Kanye himself has said, 50 has been incredibly smart making real money outside of album sales, by investing in vitamin water, clothing lines and all that other stuff.
What do you think the future of the music industry is? Do you lot even buy CD's anymore? What do you think artists should look to be doing in the future to replace money that they would have once got from CD sales....
