It’s been bubbling on the underground for a couple of years, and thanks to the monster track Heartbroken, it looks like bassline is finally About to Blow. We talk to the track’s maker T2, and vocalist, Jodie. Interview by Emanuel “Boywonder” Ezugwu. Main image by James Pearson-Howes
Playlisted on 1Xtra, Choice and Kiss, and the subject of a bidding war between various major labels, Leeds producer T2 has created a track that could do for bassline what KP & Envi’s Shorty Swing My Way did for UKG. We tackle T to see what’s up with Heartbroken and working with Madonna.
Heartbroken is blowing up right now. As a Leeds producer, how are you feeling about the love the single is receiving?
It’s a good feeling. It’s been a long time coming and I’ve been working hard, so it’s definitely good to know that we have taken it this far.
How did you get into producing?
I just love music; I couldn’t wait till I actually produced. I always saw myself making my own beats. I wanted to make my own music for the reaction off of people. I was 13 when I started making music.
So have you or the single been signed yet?
Well, right now I’m in the middle of sealing a deal, but as for my label situation, I’ve signed a new label deal called Powerhouse/ 2NV Records. Right now I’m just developing a few artists, working on a compilation and putting the finishing touches on my album. I’m just in the lab really.
I hear rumours SonyBMG is trying to get you - is that true?
Like I said, we’re in the middle of sealing a deal - RWD will be the first to know.
What is the situation with Jodie? Will she be featuring on the track?
Yeah, Jodie’s singing on the tune yes, she’s a session singer on it. That’s the situation at the moment, can’t really get too deep into it, but that’s the situation at the moment.
Didn’t Jodie actually write the track though?
Like I said, I can’t really get too into that.
OK, so tell us about your name?
You see the thing with me is I like having the mystery behind me innit. I don’t even let me mum call me, by my first name (laughs). T2 is the initials and that. Probably because I was big fan of the movie Terminator when it came out, but it’s initials at the same time still.
Why is bassline so popular up north?
Boy (takes deep breath) if you come clubbing with northerners and see What gwan up north, you’ll know what I mean. It’s just the energy, and it’s bringing the ladies back into the club. Whatever brings the ladies is a good look.
What’s next for you?
I’ve been asked to collaborate with people like Madonna, and at the same time I’m still keen to work with people from the hood. So there’s a lot of things in the pipeline. I’m all for developing artists and I’m still on the look out for new talent as well.
Ok rewind - you’ve been asked to work with Madonna?
I can’t really go too deep into that at the moment, but I can say that it is what it is, so just have a look out. We’re not even aiming low, we’re looking to take it as far as possible.
Will you continue making bassline or do you intend to branch out when you sign to a major?
Its’ not even the whole commercial bit. When I make my music, I try to find a balance with it. Heartbroken is not a typical bassline tune, nothing ever sounded like that ever before. I always try to make that universal sound.
Did you predict the track would do so well?
I’ll be honest with you, no way! It’s not that I doubted myself, but it’s just that I didn’t think that single would do that much. I also thought I wanted to take it further, but I didn’t think that would be the tune to take it there. But it’s a good feeling man, it’s definitely a good feeling.

We meet 18 year-old Jodie, the girl behind Heartbroken’s super-catchy vocal.
How long have you been singing?
Since I was about 10, so eight years now. I met T2 through friends, he found out I was a singer and we did a couple of tracks together. It just went from there.
Why do you think the track is becoming so popular?
I think it’s something that a lot of people can relate to because a lot of people have been heartbroken. I don’t know why the kids love it so much when they don’t know much about being heartbroken, but there you go (laughs).
What was your inspiration behind it?
I’m not sure. I thought of the melody and I had just songs in my head about being heartbroken and heart-ache and I just started writing the lyrics. I was sitting at home in my bedroom one day and it came from there really. It wasn’t from personal experience or anything.
What do you think of the intense bidding war amongst the labels?
To tell you the truth I don’t know what’s been really going on with the record labels. I heard that there were a few who were interested, but I didn’t know there was bidding wars. That’s the first I’m hearing about it. I know that five major labels like Universal, SonyBMG and Polydor were all interested and stuff but it’s news to me.
Why is bassline so popular?
It’s really popular up north with the urban scene, like on Fridays and Saturday people will go up to Warehouse - bassline’s taking over the scene a bit more.
What’s next for you?
Hopefully to get signed and to do an album with different types of music. I want to get myself out as an artist.
