Online Review: FWD>> and Rinse @ The End
Artist:
Wiley
Friday night saw the dubstep institution that is FWD>> clash the hefty, underground radio waves of Rinse FM in what was inevitably London’s hottest beat clash in a long, long while.
True to form, the Plastic People veterans sent lighter worthy tummy-rumbles surging through The End as if bass was going out of fashion. When we’d finally tackled the queue, Distance and MC Crazy D were warming things up with a heated set of dubstep bangers, old and new. What was to follow was a stern reminder of why punters were braving one-hour queues. Karnage and a tingle through the spine style entrance from Wiley who starts on “07961897033, I’m so E3,” progressing into a glimpse of old skool Sidewinder as the Eskimo Boy delivered bars from the past alongside recent additions from his seminal Playtime is Over. The big Flo Dan gave a similar performance, his ragga tone gracing the bass-weight of Kode 9.
Nevertheless, sounds don’t get any fresher than Newham Generals’, Footsie and D Double’s quick-fire rants over the sounds of Geeneus vs. Tubby. The foursome soon had all eyes on booth as dubsteppers and grime-heads alike moved to Double’s “oooahh, oooahh” and Footsie’s Rasta man chant, gun-fingers and lighters akimbo.
The other of the two rooms played host to old skool 4x4 beats verging on speed garage [I think they call it niche these days] and yet more dubstep, supplied by Spyro, Vectra, Scratcha and more. The vibe in The End was such that I doubt anyone can recall a bad set. It’s worth noting the attendance of Benga, Hatcha, and Appleblim and, in particular, N-Type, who applied his usual technical prowess to a host of new anthems. Speaking of which, as predicted at the pre-rave drink-up ‘that tune’ on the tip of the tongues of just about everyone in dubstep, that tune being Benga and Coki’s extra-special Night received no less than five plays on my count. There’s no question that this has to happen more often, if only to point out the blatant unity between London’s two underground stalwarts that are dubstep and grime. As FWD>> head back to their basement and Rinse to their airwaves, RWD are crossing our fingers for more of the same.
