One To Watch: Anyone For Mims?
Artist: MIMS

New York rhymer Shawn Mims is much more than just a rapper to watch. Like Jay-Z, this ambitious young man is set to solidify his status as both spitter and CEO.

If a song ever did exactly what it says on the tin, it’s Mim’s This Is Why I’m Hot. Since releasing the single independently last year, this 25 year-old artist and business-man from Washington Heights, NYC has been causing a big buzz. Stripped down but banging, the Black Out Movement produced tune has been the subject of much attention, with everyone from Talib Kweli, Remy Ma and Junior Reid all doing versions. "It reaches out to every market;" says Shawn Mims of the single. "The Mid-West, the hyphy, dirty south... everywhere!"

While the song is getting serious spins, until recently no one really knew who this dude was. "I’m kind of a mystery to most people," grins Mims. "I’m not one for really putting my face out there, but that’s changing because I get underestimated so much; I’ve been an underdog for so long," he says. "The industry hasn’t understood what I can bring to it," he states confidently.

He’s not the only one who has faith in his music. Capitol Records saw the bigger picture and inked the impresario to a deal. "I’m really excited. The album is titled Music Is My Saviour (See what he did there (M.i.m.s!) - Ed) and I definitely put my blood, sweat and tears into it. I’m a New York artist but I don’t think like a typical New Yorker. I separate myself from the hip hop game not just as a rapper but as a musician and I think that’s important. Music should be more than where you come from and who did your beats. In terms of A&R, I did this on my own." A combination of all the tracks he’s worked on over the last few years, Mims masterminded the project himself by way of his imprint American King Music. Not just a rhymer, Mim’s is also about the making of money from music. "Shawn Mims is the business-man and Mims is the artist. I’m a business-man in the sense I know what hip hop brings to you financially. But Mims doesn’t worry about the money, he’s there for the art and the love of the music."

Born Shawn Mims to Jamaican parents, Mim’s has, like many people, overcome struggles to get to this stage in life. Losing both of his parents and a younger sister by the time he was 13, the young orphan decided to turn the negative into a positive. "It made me stronger," he says. "And it’s made me the person I am today. I think for me, my biggest thing is not being underestimated. When you hear my album you’re going to hear a musician who knows what they’re doing," he insists. "Anyone can be an MC but not everyone can orchestrate an album. For me, my album is a work of art, it’s a masterpiece."

With his own label, a bagful of hits and a business brain already on his shoulders, we’re confident this kid is set to blow this year.
