Last Word: Nas - Still Nasty
Artist:
Nas
It’s safe to say that Nas is a true hip hop legend so when we got to speak to him as he preps new album hip hop is dead there was more than a little bredding going on. Interview by Raj Kapone
Last time someone called you their hero?
You, just now. That’s sh*t’s crazy son. (Raj aka Stan takes breading to another level - Ed)
Last time you finished recording an album?
Just today. It’s called Hip Hop Is Dead and it’s the first album for me coming out on Def Jam, a legendary rap label. It’s about me reconciling with a form of rap and it’s about me provoking thoughts and emotions from everybody in and out of hip hop.
Last time you offended someone (i.e. the South) with an album title?
Whoever feels bad, that means they doing something wrong. Like, if you know Nas, I got too much going on in my mind to single out one region of the world to talk about. That’s not big enough for me to talk about. The South kept the lights on in hip hop for a long time, so anybody from the South that takes offense to it, that’s good. Pick up the album and f*ck with it, cos it ain’t about no South, it ain’t about New York, it’s about hip hop. That’s why I named the album Hip Hop Is Dead cos of the negative sh*t that comes with it. People always wanna attack something.
Last time something reminded you hip hop is dead?
Jim Jones trying to talk about Jay. Or Cam’Ron trying to talk about Jay. You have artists like that going after serious artists, it’s because hip hop is dead. They’re telling you ‘Hip hop is dead so I have to create controversy for you to like me, cos hip hop is dead!’ I shouldn’t even need to offer an explanation for that sh*t.
Last time you listened to an album from beginning to end and enjoyed it?
Just last night. The Game’s album is helping hip hop, it’s the f*cking best sh*t going right now. Jay-Z coming back is the best sh*t going right now, T.I.’s record earlier this year is the best sh*t going. So it’s strong out there. It’s happening but what I’m saying is, it just needs to stay strong and not get lost. You have a lot of great artists out there, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna say what I feel, you know. There’s some sh*t I feel that could be f*cking better. They know who they are already, I don’t even need to pin-point.
Last time you spoke with Jay-Z?
Maybe three weeks ago when I performed with him on BET. I did the new single Hip Hop Is Dead and it was beautiful.
Last time you spoke with DJ Premier?
About a week ago. Unfortunately the album that we was meant to do together didn’t work for whatever reason.
Last time you listened back to Illmatic?
A year ago. No doubt it’s a classic, but I don’t listen back to my own sh*t too much.
Last time you regretted spitting on a track?
Sometimes I regret it when I rhyme on too many tracks cos some guys are like ‘Can you rhyme on mine?’ (Laughs) Like motherf*ckers think I’m gonna rap on everybody’s f*cking track whenever they want me to rap. I don’t rap like that.
Last time you received some advice from you dad?
About three days ago. He’s always giving me advice; I’m all ears.
