Catching crazy controversy in rags across the land right now, RWD catches up with Amy Winehouse to get her final thoughts on the truth behind the tabloid tales and how having a single called Rehab may not be helping matters. Interview by Raj Kapone.
Last time someone said you needed to go to rehab?
I split up with someone I was madly in love with and it just hit me really hard. It got to the point where I knew I’d f*cked it up and there was no going back, and I drank myself into a bit of a black hole. Everyone around me was saying ‘We’re gonna take you to rehab.’ I knew they wouldn’t leave me alone ‘til I did. So I went down there and the fella didn’t think I was an alcoholic, he thought I was just depressed and that was it.
Last time you heard a crazy rumour about yourself?
I was in the pub with Kelly Osbourne, who’s a good mate of mine and she went to the toilet and on the wall someone had written ‘Amy Winehouse ate my doughnut.’ When she told me, I was p*ssing myself. Cos there’s rumours in the paper about my weight loss, and the truth is that I have lost weight but not cos I have any disorder or anything.
Last time you insulted someone else?
I do it all the time when I’m p*ssed. I’m quite a nice girl when I’m sober, actually I’m a very nice girl. Well, I like to think so, but I insult my boyfriend all the time, cos I just love winding him up and it’s so easy to do.
Last time you worked with Salaam Remi?
I did half the album with him and half with Mark Ronson. Salaam’s the most laidback person I’ve ever met and he’s so clever. Me and Mark clicked cos he’s a geek like me!
Last time you felt like a celebrity?
Today cos I was with Kelly and she’s got bodyguards and I was pretending that they were mine. I was telling all the bar staff, ‘Have you seen my bodyguard?’ It’s quite exciting cos Kelly’s really famous, but I don’t think I would get to that level of fame.
When was the last time you felt happy?
Everyday!
When was the last time you felt like sh*t?
Sometimes I get depressed but I don’t know about it cos I’m drunk! I’ll wake up and my boyfriend’s covered in my eye makeup and I’m like ‘What happened to you last night?’ He’s like ‘you cried for four hours!’ But when you’re drunk, alcohol is a depressant.
Last time you were in a fight?
Well, again, when I’m drunk (laughs). If my boyfriend says something I don’t like, I’ll fist him... oh God that sounds terrible, NOT IN A SEX WAY! I mean, I’ll chin him, but I don’t realise it.
Last time you bought an album?
I don’t buy new music, I’m really sh*t.
Do you get sent it?
Oh no, I just don’t like a lot of stuff apart from that Valerie single by The Zutons.
Last time you received a compliment?
Maybe earlier today when I left the house and asked my boyfriend if I looked ok. I can’t remember what he said but it was in Italian... ‘Bella something.’ That’ll do me!
