Liam Tootill has been finding out a little bit more about the business man turned hip hop artist about his strange entry into the music industry, plans for his new material and where you can catch him gigging…
Hey how are you?
Chillin. I mean, I say that but really I’m exhausted! Been workin’ 24-7, especially this past week as we’re finishing up the edit and mix for the first single – That Guy!
Where are you from?
San Francisco, California, but I’ve been living in the UK for years now.
How long have you been making hip hop?
I’ve only been making hip hop for a couple years. I grew up on it though, so it’s been in my veins for as long as I can remember.
Who inspired you musically growing up?
I like lyrical hip hop. So, growing up I listened to Tupac, Biggie, Wu Tang, and later on some of the iller underground cats, like, Brother Ali and The Grouch. These days I’m feeling some of Drake’s stuff, especially the mixtape, and the new B.O.B. album is ‘aaaard!
How did you first get into the music industry?
It’s a funny story actually. I got into the music industry first as a manager. I have a business background, so I was helping a friend out who was doing well overseas but was trying to break in London. I set some meetings up and at one of the meetings the producer wanted her to write some new lyrics on the spot for a beat he was making for her. That wasn’t her thing though – she was a singer, but not a writer. At the time I wasn’t really making music, but I was doing a lot of Spoken Word poetry, battles, etc. I had lyrics in my head. In order to save the meeting that I’d had to hustle hard for to make happen, I ended up writing a song for her right there in the studio! That producer ended up feelin’ what I was doing and invited me back a few weeks later to lay down some of my own Spoken Word poetry to beats.
Tell us about your tracks All in and Hustlin’…
All In and Hustlin’ were both written last summer. I wrote All In here in London. The beat is by UK producer Misty Dubs and the hook vocals are by my boy Aynzli Jones. Hustlin’ was produced by, and features, the dancehall artist Demarco. All In was written shortly after I’d quit my job to work in music full time. I’d been living a double life for a long time, working in the city as a trader, and performing hip hop at night under the alias ‘Metis’. It had got to the point where I knew that in order to take this hip hop thing where I knew I wanted to take it, I’d have to go ‘All In’. The first single we’re releasing in London is That Guy.
Do you have any gigs lined up?
I’m in London now and will be doing shows throughout the remainder of the year: Cargo, 93 Feet East, Proud, etc. I’ve also just started a residency at ‘Concrete’ (the new night at Shoreditch House), which is a live music night that I’ll be hosting and performing at monthly. The first one was on 4 August.
Any plans to release an album anytime soon?
The Path is the album we’ll be setting a release date for soon. There are a lot of considerations around whether to release here in the UK first, go back home to the states. I just love making music, so whether the album comes out next week or next year, I’m going to be making and releasing a bunch of new stuff in the meantime and getting it out there – you’ll see it!
