NEWS : Online Review: I Luv Live Summer Sessions

Written by Nardene Scott on 28 Jul 2010

The second of the I LUV LIVE Summer Sessions was epic, not only did the line up tick every genre box the atmosphere down at Queen of Hoxton was incredible.

The night began mellow and seriously soulful up on the roof terrace whilst treated to a Jerk BBQ soul sensation Roachford blessed the mic and the keys for some intimate al fresco dining.

Following the rich sounds of Roachford events moved down into the basement which was packed from wall to wall as things got a little louder and heavier. First up hip hop/soul trio from South London, Angha kicked off the live sets hosted by lively and outspoken Ras Kwame. All wearing matching sweatshirts with the slogan You’re Gonna Heart Me gave them a lot to live up to but the group made up of two MC’s and a vocalist lived up to expectations warming the crowd up nicely. Their set went from soulful to raw hip hop to little electro twists on the final track and debut single, West End Girl.

G FrSh was next to step up to the mic after he was eventually found in the packed venue looking every bit the superstar in blacked out shades and obligatory neck bling. G FrSh started his set with the help of beat-boxer Hobbit for a unique interlude before going into his classics which had the crowd rhyming in unison with the blinged out MC.

Keeping things moving on swiftly, Mancunian MC R.I.O graced the stage for the second time at I LUV LIVE; the first being last September when he won the open mic contest which led to Bless Beats getting in touch to produce his debut single Narrow Roads which he performed alongside fellow Manc, Misha Bryan who had some powerful vocals which looked almost effortless. Deep lyrics were heard from the MC on I Remember as R.I.O traced his steps back to before he fell into music (look out for his mixtape Bottom To The Top out in August). Next up the Nathan Retro produced single Mr Unpredictable was given a slowed down refix before R.I.O leaped into a freestyle, going so hard he had to ushered off stage!!!

The first of two My Ish artists to entertain the crowd was West London MC Incisive, (Download his mixtape for free here http://www.incisive1.blogspot.com) who eased into his performance quickly with new single Do It which showcased his classic hip hop flow and had the crowd charmed.
After a brief break the main act, Funky king Donaeo celebrated the release of his new single I’m Fly with a larger-than-life set, the music maestro has a crazy amount of energy, I don’t even think the crowd could keep up with him as he pulled up his tracks one after the other alongside his own live band including a saxophonist and everything!

Watching Her Move opened things up nicely before slowing the pace a little with the acoustic version of Riot Music. By the time Donaeo got to Party Hard he decided that the intimate setting at Queen of Hoxton wasn’t enough as he jumped into the crowd which meant the track had to be pulled up again. Things got a little emotional for Speechless as he sang about an old flame of his, finally finishing with just as much energy as he started with I’m Fly closed the show.

I thought it was a wicked night, it was the fourth time i’ve been to an iluvlive event and I gotta say this was probably the best one I’ve attended. Enjoyed Donaeo’s and G Frsh’s performances but gotta say I was particularly pleasantly surprised by Angha’s set as I had never heard of them, they done some nice tracks especially the last song.

I got there late – missed GFRSH (p**sed) but caught RIO who were decent but was suprised by Incisive who I’ve never heard of but was probably the best on the night. High energy, crowd control. Great performance. Great show. Lol @ doneao and his reloads!
