RWD catch up with a collective known for bussing a move and taking street dance into the future, Definitives. RWD catch up with Glenn Hudson to find out what’s going on…
First of all who are in the group and how did you get started?
The members are Ajani, Anthony, Anthea, Adrian, Bianca, Hannah, Kelly, Kieron, Oneil, Nicole, Natasha, Rhys, Ryan and myself (Glenn). Most of us were in a group together but then I decided to leave, after a while the rest of them saw my skill progressing as a dancer and suggested we should make a group with me leading it.
Who is the best mover in the camp and who are the jokers?
I am the best mover [laughs], nah I’m playing. We all have our own unique traits that make us the best mover in some way. The jokers are Anthony, Waddah, Adrian, Anthea, Oneil and myself.
Why do you think dance crews have risen to popularity over the last few years?
Television mainly. The public are being shown what we do in our communities and enjoy it therefore other artists, business men/ women will start to use dance as an investment and/ or for publicity reasons. All of this is not all but apart of the reason for the growth in popularity.
What was it like performing at Gay Pride? How was the response…
It was really fun and nerve racking at the same time as it was the first time we danced in front of a crowd as huge as Gay Pride. The response was very nice, we didn’t know what to expect the response to be but it turned out very positive.
Watching the videos…
…we can see you’ve worked very hard on your form, variation and organisation. How do you describe your style of dance?
My style of dance is an interpretation of how the music sounds to me. Our base style is hip hop however if I feel a certain way towards the music then I may add in other styles such as house, contemporary or breaking for example.
Talk us through how you prepare for a show…
Well I start off by finding out what type of show it is and what kind of audience will be watching, this allows me to know what to do and what not to do in terms of music, however sometimes I do a set the way that I’m feeling at that moment in time regardless of what type of show it is. I then choreograph a couple of routines and drill them until my dancers are clean with the moves. When the show draws nearer I then start to make the soundtrack, teach the intro, position the routines, add transitions and choreographic devices to them, teach the outro then just continue running the piece until everyone is clean and ready to perform it.
What’s been your biggest achievement so far and what did you feel when you did it?
My biggest achievement so far is winning London’s Best Dance Crew (LBDC). I was speechless when it happened and happy that it was finally over as it went on for four months with each month groups getting knocked out, pushing groups to their limits and out of their comfort zones with the challenges that were set. Knowing where we started as a group, winning that meant a lot.
Why are Definitives better than the rest?
We are not really better than anyone because there are a lot of strong groups/ companies out there that are the best in their own way. I would say we are the best in our own way because “WE DO WE”.
Any tour or big group plans?
In terms of plans, we are looking to travel around the world, train with other choreographers and learn new things, compete and showcase in other countries alongside some of the best choreographers and crews out there.
What’s the next step for Definitives?
The next step for us to just keep training hard, push our boundaries and reach heights we never thought possible to reach.
