NEWS : FIFA 11 vs. PES 2011 [E3 IMAGES INSIDE]

It’s that time of year again; Konami and EA seek to use the close of the domestic season to build up hype about their annual footballing rehashes. This time, of course, the World Cup is leaving additional leather sphere based excitement unnecessary, but this is a games column, so we are more than happy to oblige…

As ever, the makers of PES and FIFA are calling this the most enhanced and wonderful incarnation of the beautiful game to be released so far (just imagine if they said it was good, but not quite as good as FIFA 2006, or PES 8!). Without sitting down with the game in our hands there is no way of determining the veracity of their claims. What we can do at this point though, is have a look at the sales pitch and see which makes us drool most.

PES 2011 boasts ‘total control’ which will be as horrifying to the novice as it is exciting to the seasoned player. This total control means that passes have to be weighted to perfection, and angled to the degree for the ball to go where you want. This coupled with a new and (we really hope) improved defender AI means that games are due to become more slow and considered.

FIFA 11’s biggest boast is its new personality+ feature. This doesn’t mean that you can record personalities and play them back at a time convenient to you. Instead it is an attempt from EA to make the digital depictions of footballers on screen behave more like their real world counterparts. There is still no news on whether Marco Materazzi will insult opponents’ sisters, or Cristiano Ronaldo will wink suggestively at his bench. On this we will keep you posted.

After nearly a decade of gaming dominance from the Pro Evolution/ ISS series, it was widely accepted that FIFA 10 was the pick of last year’s football simulators. If FIFA 11 is anything like the latest World Cup edition we think Pro will have a LOT of work to do take back the prestigious ‘best footy game’ title. It is up to Konami to raise their game this time round, so we await early autumn with bated breath, just as soon as the World Cup is over.
