FASHION : Reset London Spotlight on…PC Williams

Written by Nardene Scott on 18 May 2010

When PC Williams started her brand last year her aim was to use her knowledge of fabrics to create new aesthetics producing streetwear which was pushed to the edge. RWD catch up with her ahead of her second showing at Reset London later this month to talk dream collaborations and the current state of the UK streetwear market.

Who are you and what’s your brand called?

My name is PC Williams, the brand and I share the same name.

How long have you been in fashion business?

I started up the label in early 09’.

What label/designer inspired you to start your brand?

I wouldn’t say a designer or label inspired me; the culture I’m surrounded by inspired me to start up what I’m doing.

What’s new for your brand this season?

I’ve collaborated with a designer “Halal Meats” on a piece this season which is exciting. I’ve expanded upon what I did last time round with fabric combinations etc. and I think I’ve pushed that further. It’s a definite follow on from what I did previously and a good link of what’s to come.

Where will your brand be in 5 years?

My only objective is to continue growing, so I guess I’ll see you in five years.

What opportunities do you feel you get by being part of Reset?

For me it’s nice to get to hang out with all the guys behind the brands for a couple of days. Everyone does a million and one things and so this is a nice opportunity to hang out and catch up. As for the brand, The Reset exposes it to a wider audience who aren’t aware of the brand and that’s always a bonus. It’s also nice to meet your consumer face to face and talk to them and get the views and thoughts on what you are doing.

UK streetwear is relatively new – why should people pay attention?

I don’t think that UK streetwear is new at all. It hasn’t been as popular as US streetwear but we’ve always had it. I think that just like with other fashion styles and trends it works in cycles. It just so happens that there was a boom in independent labels in the UK over the last five years. As a consumer it’s nice for me to see how it’s constantly changing and evolving and how the needs of the consumer are constantly changing. Whilst brands aim to please their consumer, they also endeavor to grow and it is nice to see that growth and progression.

Who/What would be your ideal clothing collaboration?

There are a few collaborations I have in mind. I think I’d like to collaborate with brands/individuals outside of the streetwear scene. I want to do collaborations that don’t necessarily sound like they’d work out/fit but I think the challenge could create some interesting pieces, whether clothing or product.

I’d love to collaborate with an English heritage sportswear company. I want to be able to spend days going through their back catalogues and let their heritage and history influence my designs. I think a good solid history and my imagination could create really exciting functional pieces.

Do you have a website? Where can we buy your clothes?

The website is www.pc-williams.com and as of the end of May the online shop will go live.

Any last words?

Hope to see you at Reset.

This is a great interview and I’m pretty sure your label will go from strength to strength. I think a collaboration outside of your comfort zone will definitely tap into the creative side in you.

  4. This is a great interview; the greatest opportunity for innovation lies at the point where two different worlds meet. I look forward to seeing the outcome of a collaboration with a heritage brand.
