With the release of his debut single on Monday 24 May, RWD thought it was a perfect time to get in touch with the up and coming Twissman and see what the talented rap come R&B star had to say about all things music. Liam Tootill asks the questions.
Hey, how’re things?
Everything’s great at the moment thanks. I’m just trying to further my career as an artist and have been doing a lot behind closed, so I am excited to see the outcome.
Firstly, tell us a bit about your debut single The Way She Moves, released 24 May. What’s the track all about?
The Way She Moves is about being in a club party and dancing the night away, eyeing up that special female. Then of course going for the kill [laughs].
The tune is already enjoying heavy rotation on video channels such as AKA, FLAVA and MTV BASE – where else are you pushing the record?
Yeah, the tracks being released by Defenders, Corey Johnsons label and we are currently doing a lot of plugging. Radio, clubs etc. DJ Cameo and Ace & Vis have supported the track a lot on 1xtra so I want to say thanks to them and any other DJs spinning it.
What was it like working with singer-songwriter Tayong?
He’s great! I believe he’s very talented as he raps, sings and has a very wide range of influences when it comes to track writing. We worked together on an album entitled TNT in the space of two months. It will be released very shortly and is definitely one for the ladies!
Are you rap or R & B or a bit of both?
To be honest I’ll say both and more. I really like all types of music and if someone can make me feel or grasp what they are saying no matter what the genre, it interests me. I’ve also got a few electro and acoustic tracks coming out.
We heard that you used to be destined for a career in sport. Is this true? What sport did you play? Why did you end up pursuing a career in music?
Yes, I was very involved in sport. I loved football and rugby but as my school only played rugby, that’s the sport I pursued. I played for Middlesex throughout secondary school and won many trophies. I chose the musical route because I got stabbed when I was at college and had a lot of time at home to contemplate my future. Music started as a hobby but because a lot of my friends had been in similar situations I wanted to express through my music how I and others were feeling.
What musicians and artists do you look towards for inspiration and influence?
2pac, Eminem and Marvin Gaye.
You built your reputation through featuring on Channel U. Are you grateful for the exposure you received in those days?
Yes I am very grateful for Channel U who have always given me maximum support throughout my career. When you are new in the music scene they give you a chance and allow the public to recognise who you are as an artist.
What’s the album that currently working on called? And who is featuring on it? What is the musical style?
The new album is called This is Twissman. The album and I are signed to Zy Records who have had twenty top 40’s within the UK. It’s produced by Lawrence ‘Woo’ Allen who is a platinum selling producer. Woo worked with Shuge Knight and Deathrow for seven years. Artist wise it features Sway, G-frsh, Tenny Ten and some big artists from the States and Sweden.
The style of the tracks are very universal and I think it can appeal to a very wide audience. It’s commercial but real at the same time! The album will be released in the autumn and I have five single releases planned, the first of which will be out in August. I feel that it is the best work I have done to date.
Are you touring and performing gigs at the moment?
At the moment the label are organising a few summer tours but you can definitely see myself and Tayong at Luton Carnival 31 May.
Do you have any plans to perform at festivals this summer?
I do and am excited. As negotiations are still in process I can’t confirm any festivals yet but you’ll be the first to know about the up and coming dates.
Next month is RWD’s 100 issue, do you have a message for us?
Yeah, you have always kept us inundated with news about the scene. Happy 100th – at least you’ll live longer than me [laughs].
