Nardene Scott catches up with Producer/ DJ Noisses who has been tearing up rave upon rave for quite some time now to find out about his new EP, how he’s looking forward to playing at festivals this summer both here in the UK and in LA and also discover exactly how friendly the UK dubstep scene is…
So how did you get involved with the dubstep scene?
Funny enough I was in San Francisco and I heard Skream for the first time, Midnight Request Line was the first tune I heard and I was a bit worse for wear because of the night before and it kind of struck a chord in me. Basically I was like, what is this, it’s crazy and I started making it then, like three years ago and then two years ago I had my first release and it went from there really.
How did that release go?
Yeah it was good; got a lot of good responses from a lot of people.
What’s it like on the dubstep scene is everyone quite close knitted and always reaching out to each other?
Yeah, I’m part of the party starters which includes Klose One, Rattus Rattus and Rack n Ruin too. The scene, it’s friendly but it’s tough, similar to D&B because of the way they work and I compare it to drum n bass because they like to keep it to their own thing and I think dubstep is a bit like that. I think if you’ve been involved with it coming up from roots then they have slight ownership of it. But it’s good because the best thing about dubstep is that it’s constantly evolving like new styles are coming out every few months.
So what are your other influences within and outside of dubstep?
I make a lot of other genres of music too, I always have, music in general is my main influence I love all kinds of music and I make all kinds of music so hopefully that all comes through in my dubstep as well.
Who else are you feeling at the moment on the UK scene?
Dubstep-wise Flux Pavillion, he’s a young guy and he’s killing it his productions are amazing and his music ability is really good as well, I can hear that coming through in his tracks which is important because a lot of people can just make big bassline tunes but you can tell when they don’t have music on their side sometimes. Rack n Ruin is a friend of mine he makes kind of electro bassline dirty house kind off stuff, he’s really good as well. Polar bear not dubstep he’s a spoken word poet and I’m going to be working with him actually on a new project which is going to be pretty sick. It hasn’t even got a name yet but the only way I can describe it is, it’s like a leftfield Massive Attack type project, there’s a lot of vocalists involved on the production so some tunes will have singers some will have rappers.
You’ve just released a new EP what can you tell us about the tracks on there?
I just wanted to do kind of like a mixture, like there’s three tracks on there and I like to think well some people don’t think they’re different but I think they are. Yeh there’s kind off a big nasty one a kind of skippy one and a little p funk they call it, kind of a funky bassline one. I just like big basslines that when they drop on the dancefloor they’ll have a big impact and people will just screw their face up and dance basically. That’s the main thing.
So what raves do you like going to at the moment?
Deviation is a big one for me, I love Deviation, it’s always a good night because the vibe is always good and everyone is always up for a dance and club wise, Plastic people is a great club to go to for all different nights. I do try to go out as much as possible but its hard when you’re also playing out loads as well.
Where have you been playing out?
All around London really, I’m a resident DJ at the G-Shock Secret Wars battles and that’s not really the dubstep stuff that’s more like party sets so just everything. You can expect all good music funk and soul, hip hop to like drum n bass, garage and dubstep, just good music as long as it’s good and it’s banging. I like to keep everyone on their toes as well.
What’s the rest of your plans for 2010?
I’m in the process of putting together some stuff for Little Narstie, nothing is guaranteed, I’ve given stuff to Professor Green as well for his album so we’ll see what happens there. A girl called Holly Crook who’s a reggae influenced singer, good friend of mine just done a new tune with her and I’m actually contemplating an album at the moment, it might be a bit too early but why not you know, why not.
Where else can people catch you playing out this summer?
Glastonbury, I’m playing out there I think I’ve got four sets at Glastonbury, we’re doing Bassline Circus stage, Trash Can City stage as well and a couple of other things there. Secret Garden as well we’re doing a secret party in Secret Garden which you have to go through this little tent and cover to get to so that should be pretty good. We were doing the ATG rave in LA but unfortunately that has been postponed until September. The next big rave in London is going to be the ATG one at Gramaphone on 22nd May apart from that you can catch me at the Clerkenwell pop up bar, I’m resident DJ there so every other week I’ll be there.
Lastly if you could explain your music in three words what would you say?
Big, Banging, Bass.
