Nardene Scott caught up with Kelly Rowland to find out about her ongoing musical relationship with David Guetta, the possibilities of a Dilemma part II and what her upcoming album has in store for both her urban and dance fans…
How are you? Congratulations for your World Music Award Nomination how did your performance go?
Oh thank you we had fun, it was a great night there were other great performances, we had fun, just came in there and did our thing.
Let’s talk about the new single, Commander, you’re hooking up with David Guetta again which seems to work really well is this an ongoing relationship and can we expect any other collaborations with European artists?
Yeh, you know David and I have been clicking so well and I love working with him and it was just effortless. He sent me a track I played it for one of my favourite writers Rico Love and next thing I knew we had a great record.
Cool I see there’s a whole army theme behind the track, how did you come up with the lyrics and the army concept?
You know you think about the military when you think about the word commander period and I think that was the inspiration above anything but when Rico wrote the song it was more so about ruling the crowd you know being the commander of the evening. Usually the DJ does that but from hereon out I’m going to be your commander.
I know for the past couple of years you seem to have been mainly within UK and Europe, What do you think of the music scene here and are you familiar with the genres of underground music we have like UK funky, dubstep and grime?
Yes, definitely I love, well one of my favourites is Chase & Status, I love the drum and bass and basement feel like when I go out in London I like the fact they’re not just going to play same old same old things that we hear, they’re mixing old skool into new skool. One of my favourite DJ’s from London is DJ Jarren C.
Not too long ago you posted on your blog that you were looking for new dance moves for upcoming videos did you find any exciting ones and when you’re out what is your favourite music to dance to?
The funny thing is that everybody has been shy sending dance videos in nobody has sent any in, I don’t know why but I think it’s cool to find out what’s going on in the new generation of dance, period. When I’m out it doesn’t matter I just dance to it all, yesterday I went out with my friends and every song that came on, I was just dancing to whether that was rock, pop, R&B, whatever it was.
You have mentioned in previous interviews that Grown Ass Woman penned by the uber talented Ne-Yo is your favourite track on the album. Do you feel like you owed a more urban song for the sake of your fans and can you tell us a little bit about the song lyric-wise?
You know what I pretty much do what I love to do whether it’s dance or urban and I feel like urban inspires so much and dance inspires me and my urban side as well. The same way it’s inspired Akon and Black Eyed Peas, so many artists.
What are you listening to at the moment what’s in rotation on your iPod?
I hate to sound self absorbed but it’s my records, unless I’m listening to the radio and then you know I like Rude Boy or OMG by Usher and he’s urban based and dance inspired that track. I think it’s important for urban to roll with dance as well I think as you move as an artist you definitely want your fans to move with you. Establish your own too that’s what I feel I did, establish my own, period, I feel like I carved out a niche.
Talking about the upcoming album I heard your track Gone with Nelly. It seems to be along similar lines to the Dilemma track was that a spur of the moment thing or had you been speaking about it for a while?
It was just a spur of the moment thing like we’re just going to see what happens because I haven’t heard anything about the song from Nelly. I was in my bed it was like twelve o clock at night when Nelly called me to come to the studio to record the song I just came put the chorus down for him hung out for a bit then went back to my bed. Then over the next couple of days he said how much he loves the record although we haven’t discussed it really.
Can you tell us more about the upcoming album are there any more features and is there a particular sound it’s headed?
There are no more features than before but like I said before it is going to be dance inspired as well as urban period.
Previously you have stepped into acting what was that like and have you got anything in the works at the moment I read on your website you wouldn’t mind doing your own TV show and even being behind the camera?
Yeah being behind the camera, definitely, let’s just see what happens. The right script has to come around for me to want to take a pause in music right now because I just love it being in the studio, I just love my music basically. Oh I’ll definitely be hitting the summer spots like Ibiza too.
