Since Chipmunk hit the top ten with Diamond Rings in July of last year, his mainstream stock has risen like a rocket, including hitting the top of the singles chart with Oopsy Daisy and going to number two in the albums chart with his debut disc I Am Chipmunk. With the platinum edition released today, Rajveer Kathwadia catches up with the young spitter to talk about new tracks, the second album and how he feels about his F64 position…
Hi Chip, firstly congratulations of another top ten single, what’s that your fourth consecutive one now?
Yeah [laughs].
And you’ve got the I Am Chipmunk Platinum Edition out now so you’re doing big things right now…
Yeah there’s a track on there called Superstar and the purpose of that is to try to give people an idea of the direction that I am going for, for my second album coming in 2011. That’s main thing for me, the single did what the single did so thank you for buying it, but onto the next one.
So it’s a sneak preview into the future?
Yeah the direction I’m going in…
What sort of direction is that? Can you give us a heads up so we can be like ‘Yeah we knew Chip was doing that’?
Back to bars innit, not that I ever went, but it’s like the first album was ‘functional’. You know it was a very UK sounding album and it did what it was supposed to do, what I wanted it to do, and that drive, that passion and that fire is what got me noticed in the first place, but I chose not to execute it through my singles from Oopsie Daisy onwards. Diamond Rings and Chip Diddy Chip is still about me being cocky and confident, some would say arrogant, I disagree [laughs], but then it’s just back to executing the art form cos now everyone’s got the machine behind them I need to find something that can separate me from other people. One thing I know I can do is bars, you’ll never see the day where another artist that’s selling music can stand next to me and just spit, so until that day I’ll just have to execute that through my albums and try to separate myself.
Are you looking forward to your forthcoming tour?
The Shine Shine tour is coming soon, crossing over from June to July; looking forward to that. Bringing the songs to life once again you know? Got a different set and four new tracks as well, should be popping.
Can you tell us about those four new tracks that people can find on the I Am Chipmunk Platinum Edition?
We got History with me and Wretch 32, you know me and Wretch doing what me and Wretch do. Uh Ay, I don’t know what that is…
It’s got this crazy dance/electro feel to it. It’s a bit mental…
Yeah it’s mad. And then there’s Superstar, which is the one I’m gonna push myself and do a video for because that’s what I believe in and that’s the direction I’m going in. People need to hear that.
We know that by nature you’re quite a competitive guy so how did you feel about coming in second in the F64 run-down?
I was cool man, People say like ‘everyone only says his one is good because he’s got the big audience’, but to be fair Tinchy’s had a couple of number ones as well so you can’t say it’s just the audience thing because he’s got a big audience as well. As for second place, honestly, if I’m going to be dead honest… I couldn’t care less [laughs]. No lie, I can spit so what? I feel like no matter how hard I try or how good I am or how much I try to better myself, a set of ignorant people are not just gonna want to rate me like I shouldn’t be able to do both. Release a single and know it’s gonna do chart and then come in and do that to level of which I did. I think a lot people stopped tucking their shirts and trying to show Gucci belts after that you know what I’m saying? I’m clearly influential. Me and Wretch were talking about it the other day and he was like “You just gotta keep killing ‘em man”. My thing is now that ‘you can’t sell something to someone that don’t buy’; someone who sits at home and watch my F64s and say ‘ahh Chip’s still cold though,’ You might not relate to a song like Oopsie Daisy but it wasn’t made for you so shut up innit. You know what I mean? It’s like that. Certain songs I made for specific audiences, but what I do understand as well is that people feel what they relate to, so a lot of people right now are pursing illegal activities, hustling, doing their thing out on road. Safe. I respect you, you’re doing your thing, by any means get lizzy. I’m not trying to appeal that way. Cos they’re not gonna be the ones buying your records… Being from the hood ain’t a Blue Peter Badge. Like I know some of the worst people that you could ever come across in your life, but I don’t feel the need to be executing that through my music because that’s just not me. It’s like a lot people go and take a storm and turn it into a hurricane for a song, a lot of people go into the booth and turn into Scarface, but they ain’t killed no one. For me it’s just like cool, safe you’re doing that and I respect that, just respect what I’m doing as well innit cos page for page lyrically you’ll never be able to turn me over any way, like I said before, the day will never come when an artist that’s selling music will have to stand next to me and spit bars just like how we did it on Westwood three years ago with me and Ice Kid, I’m still here.
