NEWS : Online Review: Shank World Premiere

Wednesday night saw the urban glitterati descend on the Brixton Ritzy for the world premiere of Shank.

With the red carpet in place and the obligatory screaming school girls on stand-by to see the cast that includes Adam Deacon, Bashy and Kaya Scodelario (Effy in Skins), Shank is set in the fantasy, futuristic world of decaying London, a place where an ever-increasing population has left the city’s food supply worryingly strained, resulting in (the films tagline) the gangs taking over, embarked in “postcode war” battles for “munchies”.

Director Mo Ali manages to breathe fresh life into the UK urban film tradition with a mixture of action-packed drama and Manga inspired animation. While the fantasy aspect of the storyline allows for a separation from the usual “glorifying violence” criticism levelled at films of this genre, the comedy littered throughout the plot brings a light-hearted nature to what could so easily become just another urban film depicting gritty gang violence.

One of the best things about Shank, without doubt, is Kedar Williams-Stirling, who plays lead character Junior. As soon as the 15 year old stepped onto the red carpet in his Sunday suited best, his star quality was clear to see – with the screaming girls taking it up to ear-piercing levels. We predict big things!

Stepping out of the Ritzy afterwards, film-goers seemed collectively impressed with the end result of Shank – a thriller that takes the UK urban genre to the next level. Expect a 90 minute rollercoaster sitting on the edge of your seat, laughing out loud one moment, and fighting back tears the next.

Shank is due for release on Friday 26 March.
