Last night we were lucky enough to be part of a small, select audience who were able to witness Alicia Keys deliver a flawless performance at BBC’s legendary Maida Vale studios. An intimate audience made up of competition winners, 1Xtra DJs and us(!) stood mere metres away from the soul superstar as she sang, played the keys, and answered questions from Trevor Nelson and members of the crowd.
Entering to the powerful blues of Go Ahead, the sublime Miss Keys never faltered as she worked her way through a 12 track set that surely didn’t miss out anyone’s favourite. Backed by her band, the singer who has clocked over 25 million record sales worldwide as well as 12 Grammys performed classics such asFallin’, No One and a reggae tinged rendition of You Don’t Know My Name. There was of course time for a selection of new favourites as well from the classically piano trained artist’s latest album The Element Of Freedom. As well as the single Doesn’t Mean Anything, we were presented with the amazing Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart and Un-thinkable (I’m Ready) where Alicia strutted and posed with a swagger she may have learnt from Jay-Z. Lil Mama could do with taking some lessons!
Talking of Jigga-man, Keys delivered a stripped down solo version of Empire State Of Mind from her piano stool, treating the gathered collective to a special ‘London’ shout-out. Closing the hour-long set with If I Ain’t Got You, the soulstress dedicated the song to her fans, some of whom were eagerly gathered at the front to pose questions to the ‘super’woman herself. Included as part of an Alicia Keys special on Trevor Nelson’s BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra simulcast show on Saturday night where you’ll get to hear back audio from the special evening, Alicia candidly answered the creative questions, revealed that her next single will be the Beyonce collaboration Put It In A Love Song, and even answered a request for a hug from an overcome fan. All together now… awwwwww!
We definitely feel truly privileged to have been attendance for such a special evening.
