We go backstage at the vinspired National Awards to get lasts from Inbetweeners actors Emily Head and Joe Thomas…. words by Danny Walker image by Richard Lea-Hair

[Please call them Joe and Emily, please call them Joe and Emily] Hey guys, when was the last time you volunteered?

Joe: Last time was probably at school actually, when I did some volunteering for my Duke of Edinburgh award. I was working with young people with learning disabilities.

Emily: Also at school, I think, it was volunteering to do community theatre in schools in Peckham and stuff. Before [vinspired], I didn’t think volunteering would be so much for.

What was the last thing you were in-between? (See what I’ve done there?)

E: [Laughs] Nice.

E: Well I’m currently in-between jobs. Does that count?

J: Well yes, we’re both in-between jobs. So now…

Have they not commissioned a third series [of Inbetweeners]?

E: Ah, no they have, they have. They’re writing it as the moment.

When was the last time you were nominated for an award?

J: Well that was the TV Choice awards where we won and I was in a really bad mood all evening.

E: Were you?

J: I was. I can’t remember why exactly but I had an argument with one of the writers cos we had a love/ hate relationship.

Is that because you couldn’t get with Carli in the last series?

J: [Laughs] Yeah, I was requesting that certain scenes be put in.

E: Basically, what Joe wanted was a love scene between you and Jay [Cartwright played by James Buckley] wasn’t it? [room laugh]. That is what you really wanted.

J: Yeah that’s what I wanted. I think that would be really good.

Last time you were approached by a fan or maybe a stalker?

E: I was on the tube and there were a large group of guys who were on the way back from football and they sang a couple of chants about me being in Inbetweeners and really drew attention to it. I had a really long tube ride with them, ‘Carli, Carli from TV’ I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s me,’ [pulls embarrassed face].

J: That sounds quite tame, who did they support? Oxford?

What was the last audition you went for?

J: I actually auditioned for Doctor Who, which I would have loved to get. I was really disappointed not to.

Was it fifth Dalek on the left?

J: Yeah [laughs], it was for a sort of hideous monster. I read for the girl’s boyfriend. You know Doctor Who always has a companion. So yeah, it wasn’t to be.

What was the last thing you stole?

E: I genuinely don’t think I’ve stolen anything.

J: I… didn’t… pay for something in a restaurant recently.

E: JOE!!!

J: Only cos they overlooked it – I’m always quite honest.

Last time you acted like your characters?

J: I think I act a little like Simon quite a lot in that I make fairly simple errors a lot. I once forgot where I lived.

E: (Laughs]. I think Carli is similar to me anyway because she is a girl.

J: Very insightful.

Lastly tips for 2010?

E: Volunteer!!!

J: Get involved in your local community.
