NEWS : It’s All Kosha

Written by RWD on 26 Dec 2009

We first came across Kosha when he graced RWD’s corridors as an intern. Next thing we know, he’s gone and signed a record deal and his first single Old Skool is blowing up, so we had to have a sit down and catch up with our former employee… image by Carnegie & Conway

So a lot’s happened since you were last at RWD as an intern.

Yeah when I was working at RWD I was handing out CDs to promote my music and basically I gave one to the wife of a CEO of an independent label. I had a couple of meetings with them and they liked what I was doing and they offered me a 360 deal with them and I signed up. They’ve built a nice strong team for me so I’m just trying to keep the ball rolling, keep pushing music out and make the most of what I got.

Your single Old Skool’s getting a really good reaction as well.

Yeah it’s getting a lot of exposure. I actually had that track even before I signed with my label. When I heard the beat it just reminded me of that old skool era and the lyrics just came to me, I didn’t even write it down. Everyone has their own memories of what old skool is to them. This is mine.

Will we be hearing any more music from yourself anytime soon?

I’m constructing the album at the moment, which will hopefully drop next summer and getting the next single ready as well. I’m always recording new music so we’re just trying to pick the right songs. I’ve got features from the likes of Wiley, Ghetts and Skepta on there as well.

What’s it like working with those guys?

It’s an inspiration. I’ve known Wiley for a little while and I used to go to his house and write songs with him, so to see him get signed and do so well is inspiring. So if you’re doing the right thing, one little move can propel you.

Have you got a Zip Card?

Unfortunately not. I don’t really qualify considering I’m 26, and I’m more of a train guy myself. You’ll always catch me on the Central Line.

So you were late getting here today. Was the train late?

Nah, the train was on time, but it was me that was the problem!

A zipcard means if you’re under 16 you can travel for free on the bus and tram, and it’s half fare if you’re over 16 and at college. Free travel for teenagers is a good thing right?

Yeah definitely! I think they should maybe introduce it to people who are 26 as well cos we need a little help out here as well. Up the age rate!

Why do you think some teenagers are harder to get through to tell them stuff like this?

I think when you’re young, no one wants to listen and everyone’s got a point to prove. They think they know it all so they don’t really wanna be told anything, but if the right people tell ‘em in the right way then they will listen. It’s just that age when you’re growing up and you feel the world is against you.

Finally, what was it like working at RWD?

It was funny. That course we did here was great and I still see a lot of the guys who were here. It was a good experience getting knowledge for the industry and also to meet artists and make connections with people. It’s also where I first met my manager so yeah I’d say it was good.
